   Ohh, NO, Sallie, I am so dismayed to learn this! Thank you ever so much for letting me know. As it was seemingly not carried in the Daily Press, I would never have learned of it. You have my deepest sympathies on the loss of your dear friend.

From Weymouth Funeral Home - @ 04/30/21:

                   Gertrude Helfrich Hedrick

NEWPORT NEWS - On Sunday, April 25, 2021, Gertrude Hedrick, 76, loving wife, mother, and grandmother went to be with our Heavenly Father.

Gertrude was born in La Grange, GA, to Paul Robert and Willie Mae Helfrich. She went to Newport News High School and nursing school briefly. Gertrude married Richard Lane Hedrick on January 7th, 1977. She had one daughter, Paula and a grandson, Paul whom she raised.

She enjoyed traveling with her family throughout the years to new places and along the East Coast. In her younger years, she had an antique store which she owned with her late husband, was stocked by travel, and later in life, travel for leisure. She always seemed to always lead whatever group she joined. In her words, because “no one knew where they ought to be”.

She was a home-room mother, PTA chairmen, VA volunteer, and Fundraiser Coordinator. She was headstrong, always sticking to her beliefs, but also outgoing. She never met a stranger, and always walked away knowing their life story. She was very caring and loving, always there for her family and friends, willing to help whenever she could, bringing the best out of all around her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and her parents, Paul and Mae.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula; her grandson, Paul, and a large extended family.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Monday, May 3rd, 2021, at Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made Liberty Live Church Missions Fund through their website https://libertylive.church/missions. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

Gertrude and I were great pals at Newport News High School, attending football and basketball games, then dancing at the "Y" afterwards. In the spring we would play tennis, and in the summer catch a bus to Buckroe Beach. It was all great fun. She was an honest and sweet girl, I was devastated to hear of her passing. She is soaring with the angels now, RIP, Gertrude

Lead Me Gently Home

Words and Music by Will L. Thompson, 1879
(07 Nov 1847 - 20 Sept 1909)

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.

* Refrain:
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
