05/05/17 - NNHS Newsletter - The Way Old Friends Do

“Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days.
An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it
meaningful: a meaningful friend - or a meaningful day.”

- Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th and current  Dalai Lama
(b. 06 July 1935)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This is a comforting song, wouldn't you agree? And who among us could not use a little comfort right now?

REQUEST:

From Deloris Jackson Morgan ('66) of VA - 05/04/17:

HELP if you can?

I received the following message from Shawn Morton looking for information on his dad, Bobby. There is also a picture of his late aunt, Diane Winkler Morton Perry ('67). If you knew Bobby or have any information, please be kind enough to share:

  Hi, Mrs. Morgan,

My name is Shawn Morton. I'm the son of Bobby Morton who went to Newport News High School in 1963; he was a sophomore that year. I purchased a 1963 yearbook off eBay which originally belonged to   Carla Fine. He may have gone there other years as well, but I'm not sure.

I also found photo of his brother, Wayne Morton ('66), in a class photo in 1956 at Parkview Elementary. I was hoping that someone in your group would maybe have some of those yearbooks or maybe knew him or had photos of my father. I don't have very many of him, for I was only a year old when he died.

I think the page you have up of the schools is amazing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Deloris! Suspecting that my memory might have failed me, I checked all my yearbooks from that era. I kept careful notes in them, and unfortunately,  I was correct; my paths never crossed with either Bobby or Wayne.

Curiously, Bobby's class picture is shown only in the '63 Anchor, and Wayne's only in the '62. The is a shot of Wayne with the JV Football Team on page 108 of the '62; it appears here in our Archive: http://www.nnhs65.com/FOOT-B-62.html

I was thus thwarted in my efforts to help Shawn, but I did add Bobby to the listings in the In Memoriam page of the Class of 1965. If Shawn can supply me with the dates and places of his father's birth and death, and perhaps the cause of his death, I can add those to his listing. Perhaps together we can all help him to learn more.

   "Anyone? Anyone?"

WOWZERONI! Thanks so much, Mayim! Strangely enough, because she's one of my very favorite actresses, I already knew this - EXCEPT for the part about her being Jewish! How could I have missed that?!?

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 05/04/17:

A woman went into a hardware store to purchase a bale of peat moss. She gave a personal check in payment and said to the clerk, "I suppose you will want some identification."

He replied, without hesitation, "No ma'am, that won't be necessary."

"Why is that?" asked the woman.

"Crooks don't usually buy peat moss," answered the clerk.

The Way Old Friends Do

Written and Composed by Benny Andersson (b. 16 Dec 1946) and Björn Ulvaeus (25 Apr 1945)

Recorded by ABBA, 1980

You and I can share the silence
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do
And after fights and words of violence
We make up with each other
The way old friends do
Times of joy and times of sorrow
We will always see it through
Oh, I don't care what comes tomorrow
We can face it together
The way old friends do

You and I can share the silence
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do
And after fights and words of violence
We make up with each other
The way old friends do
Times of joy and times of sorrow
We will always see it through
Oh, I don't care what comes tomorrow
We can face it together
The way old friends do

We can face it together
The way old friends do
