Nelson J. Groom Sr. |
Dear
Friends and Schoolmates,
We have more sad news
to report. Nelson
Groom,
husband of
Faith Strickland Groom ('64) of VA, passed away suddenly
at home in Gloucester on Tuesday, April
28,
2009 at the age of 67.
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA -
04/30/09 - "Death of Nelson Groom, Sr.":
Carol,
By now you may have seen the small DN in the DP.....
Faith (Strickland
Groom - '64 - of VA) called me
this morning to tell me what had happened. It was a heart attack at home. She
found him in the bedroom.
Understandably, she is deeply in grief, but family and church are with her.
She asked me to
call the other members of the reunion committee to tell them.....
She said a larger obit with service and interment details would appear soon.....
Dave
Oh, NO!!! No, David, I'd missed this,
so thanks so much for letting me know. If
you talk to Faith again, please pass along my deepest condolences.
This was a real shocker.

GLOUCESTER - Nelson J. Groom Sr.,
a native of Linden, Tenn., died at his home unexpectedly April 28, 2009, at
the age of 67. Nelson moved to the Hampton area in 1963 and began his career with NASA, as an Electronic Engineer in Control Systems. He was one of the original developers of the Left-Ventricular Heart Pump engineered at University of Pittsburgh, retiring from NASA in 2001. In 1964, he met and married the "love of his life," Faith Strickland, and in 1975 they moved to Gloucester, where they made their home. Nelson was a multi faceted individual with many interests. His paramount interest was his relationship with his God, his family and the joy of his neighbors. He was an avid Redskin fan and enjoyed having monthly bonfires with his best friend and neighbor, Doug Blaha, where politics, Redskin dealings, and life in general were shared. |

Words and
Music by
Robert Wadsworth Lowry,
1860
(12 Mar 1826 - 25 Nov 1899)
My life flows on in
endless song;
Above earth’s lamentation
I hear the sweet though far off hymn
That hails a new creation:
Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;
It finds an echo in my soul—
How can I keep from singing?
What though my joys and comforts die?
The Lord my Savior liveth;
What though the darkness gather round!
Songs in the night He giveth:
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that refuge clinging;
Since Christ is Lord of Heav’n and earth,
How can I keep from singing?
I lift mine eyes; the cloud grows thin;
I see the blue above it;
And day by day this pathway smoothes
Since first I learned to love it:
The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
A fountain ever springing:
All things are mine since I am His—
How can I keep from singing?
