NEWPORT NEWS - Vera L. Garth, 93, passed away on April 24, 2017. She was born in Mechanicsburg, PA in 1923 and moved to Newport News in 1944.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years E.T. Garth, Jr.

She is survived by her daughters Linda Garth Muse, her husband David, and Susan Garth Brookman, her husband Michael, four grandchildren: Brian, Paul, Mark, Adam and four great grandchildren.

Vera spoke often of her childhood growing up on a farm in Pennsylvania being the youngest of 8 children. She remembered traveling by train to Baltimore and by steamship to Old Point Comfort in Newport News to take a job at Langley Airfield during WWII working as a parachute packer for the U.S. Army Air Corp. She later worked for the Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation during WWII where she met a dashing young soldier whom she later married.

She was a wonderful cook. Her pies and cakes were always a hit at the many family gatherings she hosted. In addition to cooking, she enjoyed gardening, knitting, and other crafts. Vera will be greatly missed.

Lead Me Gently Home

Words and Music by Will L. Thompson, 1879
(07 Nov 1847 - 20 Sept 1909)

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.

* Refrain:
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
