Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

    There is more sad news this Saturday.
RT Mercer, father of Charles Mercer ('64) of Northern VA, Johnny Mercer ('67) of VA, Larry Mercer ('67) of VA, and Wanda Mercer Lemke ('70) of GA, and of the late Will Mercer, passed away in Newport News on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the age of 94.

         Rowland T. Mercer
 
      NEWPORT NEWS - Rowland Thomas "RT" Mercer, 94, was called home to be with Jesus on Thursday, April 27, 2017.

RT was a member of Parkview Church of God.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served under General George Patton, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and 5 battle stars. After service to his country he was a welder at Newport News Shipbuilding and retired after more than 35 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Estileen Milligan Mercer, one son Wilton Mercer.

Survivors include three sons, Charles D. Mercer and his wife Wendy of Alexandria, Johnny R. Mercer and his wife Susan of Poquoson, and Larry T. Mercer and his wife Sandy of Portsmouth; one daughter Wanda M. Lemke and her husband Tom of Marietta, GA; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and a special friend, Paul Salgado.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jerome Provenzano for his dedicated care.

Visitation will be from 12 to 1 PM Monday, May 1, 2017 at Parkview Church of God, with a funeral service immediately following at 1 PM. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517, or to Parkview Church of God, 1116 Briarfield Road, Newport News, VA 23605.
