Robert Edward Johnson
(d. 23 Apr 2015)

Newport News High School Class of  19__

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have yet another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter today.     Bobby Johnson, Class of 19__, passed away in Newport News on Thursday, April 23, 2015.

From the Daily Press - 04/28/15:

                   Robert Edward Johnson

NEWPORT NEWS - Robert Edward Johnson was called into the arms of Our Heavenly Father on Thursday, April 23, 2015. Bobby was born in Newport News, to Harold and Mary Johnson.

He attended Newport News High School, and it was there that he met the love of his life, and future wife of over 70 years, Anne Stephenson. They were married shortly after his graduation from the Apprentice School, at Newport News Shipbuilding where his father worked. The couple was blessed with two sons, Gary and Ron.

Bobby later transitioned to work at NACA Langley Research Center, which subsequently became NASA Langley. There, he distinguished himself through working on many projects, and eventually rose to an upper management position, garnering many awards and commendations along the way. He retired from NASA in 1977, to pursue his favorite pastimes of playing golf, traveling with his family, and a newly acquired passion for gardening. His house was well known, around the Hidenwood neighborhood where he and Anne lived for over 50 years, for the dazzling display of Azaleas that he lovingly cultivated.

Bobby and Anne Johnson

He particularly enjoyed spending time with his many close friends at the house that he built on Bryce Mountain. Bobby's easy-going nature, and ever present sense of humor endeared him to everyone that he met. He and Anne were also devoted members of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, where he enjoyed leading a Sunday School Chapel Class for many years, and developed some of his most cherished friendships.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Anne, and his brother Harold Lee.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Home Helpers Company, which provided some excellent caregivers in the final years of Bobby's very full life. In particular, the family would like to thank Kathleen Fisher, who provided extremely devoted, and loving care for Robert. She was truly his best friend, in his final time.

Our gratitude is also extended to the staff at Arbors Retirement Community, where he resided until his passing. Daddy J, your kind and loving spirit will truly be missed, and our love for you will eternally endure.

There will be a private graveside service at Peninsula Memorial Park, followed by a Memorial Service at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, on Wednesday, April 29 at 1 p.m. Arrangements are in the care of Peninsula Funeral Home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

For All the Saints
- Lyrics by William W. How (1823-1897), 1864
Music (Sine Nomine) by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), 1906

For all the saints
who from their labors rest,
Who thee by faith
before the world confessed.
Thy name, O Jesus,
be forever blest.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock,
their Fortress and their Might;
Thou, Lord, their captain
in the well-fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear,
their one true light.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

O may Thy soldiers,
faithful, true, and bold,
Fight as the saints
who nobly fought of old,
And win with them
the victor's crown of gold.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce,
the warfare long,
Steals on the ear
the distant triumph song,
And hearts are brave again,
and arms are strong.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

From earth's wide bounds,
from ocean's farthest coast,
Thro' gates of pearl
streams in the countless host,
Singing to Father,
Son, and Holy Ghost,
Alleluia!
Alleluia!
