04/22/05 - NNHS Newsletter - White Flag

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I have my radio alarm set for some very strange station which I think comes from the Twilight Zone.  It plays all sorts of different
music from practically every genre.  I never know what it's going to sing to me.  The other day this song which I'd never heard (I
lead a sheltered life...) came on and just about knocked me out of the bed.

So in addition to Magic Shower songs, we also have Haunted Radio songs which may appear on bonus Newsletters such as this.

Today is the 36th Annual Earth Day, soooo ..... Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em.  No, that's not what I meant to say!  What was it I
meant to say?

From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 04/21/05:

I was reading Kathy Pilgrim Clark's comments about Warwick County.  For some reason I remember seeing 1958 on the flag of the Corporation of Newport News. This link www.newport-news.va.us/library/virgrm/nnhist.htm gives the history of the Warwick River Shire from 1634 until 1958.

Thanks, Dave!  Yes, 1958 was the year of the consolidation.

   What a cool site!  Thanks!

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - 04/21/05:

Carol

The trumpet section in the '58 Anchor, p. 86 were from left to right:
Donald Tugwell, Julius Benton, Dan Rouse, Jimmy Grubbs, Wayne Johnson, Bill Prillaman, Chuck
Anspach, Norman Dick.

A special thanks to Ronnie Miller ('59 - of NC) for all his kind words about Julius, Johnny, and Chuck playing Bugler's Holiday.  I never tired of hearing it and only wished someone had recorded them.  They were true showstoppers!

By the way, does anyone know of someone who could be a live-in companion for an 87-year-old widow in the Grafton area for a short time?

Renee Helterbran Benton ('59)

Thanks so much, Renee!   I updated the page:

From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA - 04/21/05:

Dear Carol,

As you may recall, Mr. Mac turned 90, 9/17/04.  I had the "Breakfast Bunch" sign and add personal notes to a birthday card which I mailed to him.  I got a personal thank you note from Mr. Mac.  The last time I saw him was at a funeral he attended for the parent of one of my NNHS classmates.  Mr. Mac was accompanied by his daughter Betsy ('62), was in great health, still had a crew cut, and walked with that erect, military posture as always.

I did not see much of Mr. Mac when I was at NNHS.  I spent much more time with Mr. Keesee.

The "Breakfast Bunch" meets informally each Tuesday morning at the Warwick Motel Restaurant about 8-9:30am.  Most of the conversation revolves around NNHS, HHS, & WHS athletics prior to 1960.  It is one
of the few places that a member of the NNHS Class of 1958 will be the youngster.  Anyone interested
in attending should submit their application to the membership committee, headed up by Mickey Marcella ('54 - of VA) and Joey Lawrence (of VA) (I'm just kidding of course!).

Joe Drewry

   Thanks, Joe!

By the way, is the Breakfast Bunch just a guy thing, or are the gals welcome as well?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Okay, well,
actually I want to know.
 :oD

Oh, yes, I did finally get around to making Mr. McIntosh's page:

From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 04/22/05:

Try this.  I had no idea a screen could be cleaned from the inside too! What a difference!  Every keystroke you make,
each graphic you pull up to view, makes your monitor screen "cloudy" because of the pixels and the light particles
moving to make your images on your screen.

This is a quick screen cleaner which aids in making your monitor more clear and more vibrant.

Click on this link to activate on your monitor, remember this only takes a moment.
(This is cute, it's not one of those "screaming" surprise clips)

Thank you so much, David dear.  I'm sure we all need cleaner screens, and this is a remarkably efficient way to achieve that.
You are a delight!

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - 04/22/05:

Carol

This website gives you the prices of gas in your area.  I think it's worth passing on.

Renee Helterbran Benton ('59)

Thanks, Renee!  That is a goody!

Y'all have a good day - and take care of each other!  TYPHOONS FOREVER!

                          Love to all, Carol

White Flag

(Dido)

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you,
Or tell you that.
But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it
where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I know I left too much mess and
destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "it's over"
then I'm sure that that makes sense

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on....

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
