Once Upon a Time

“The nightingales are sobbing in
The orchards of our mothers,
And hearts that we broke long ago
Have long been breaking others.”

- W. H. Auden
(21 Feb 1907 - 29 Sept 1973)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's song is one of my sentimental favorites.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_Upon_a_Time_%28Charles_Strouse_and_Lee_Adams_song%29:

"Once Upon a Time" is a song with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams from the 1962 musical All American.[1]

In the musical, the song was performed by Ray Bolger and Eileen Herlie, and their version appears on the Broadway Cast recording. It has been sung by Eddie Fisher, Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Tony Bennett among others.

ALERT:

My computer - or rather my FTP - is having problems uploading items to the internet. It will do it; it just requires eight times longer to accomplish it. Something about too many files...

At nearly the same moment, my daughter's actual computer began experiencing REAL problems - such as its imminent demise. We are therefore splitting computer time on my PC until some other arrangement can be made.

Even without a crystal ball, I can foresee some serious delays in our future.

No, wait a minute, this is happening in real time. Sigh.

"Hold your hats, boys, here we go again!"

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of LA - 04/16/15 and 04/18/15:

Well, I'm not quite done, but was happy with the near complete progress of the 1MEB Legacy print that I've been so busy on the last 2 weeks.

All that is left to do is paint the current and historic Distinctive Unit Insignias (DUI) at the bottom of the page and any last minute touches up. I'll have it done by Monday for sure to take the digital copy and start to send it across the Brigade so folks can place their orders... I donated the 'artist fee' for the cause... And a chance to do something that I've always wanted to do... Military artwork! This shows my progress this past week, with it taking about 17 hours to get from the last stage alone.

After over 50 hours of work, here is the 1MEB Legacy Print complete. I also put the last three days progress to show the differences as well as close ups of the main part of the work. It is 22" X 28"... I hope the detail will translate well.

We are going to do an 11 x 14 Lumira matte finish photo print for $20.00 and a 24" x 30" print on Enhanced Matte for $65..00... All profit for the print will be used to fund a Memorial Rock Sculpture (that I also worked with the stone working company to design) to be placed at Ft. Polk Warrior Memorial Park.

Once Upon a Time

From the 1962 Broadway Musical,
All American
Music by
Charles Strouse (b. 07 June 1928); Lyrics by Lee Adams (b. 14 Aug 1924)

Once upon a time
A girl with moonlight in her eyes
Put her hand in mine
And said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time
Very long ago

Once upon a hill
We sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars
And waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time
Now the tree is gone

How the breeze ruffled through her hair
How we always laughed as though
Tomorrow wasn't there
We were young and didn't have a care
Where did it go?

Once upon a time
The world was sweeter than we knew
Everything was ours
How happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time
Never comes again
