Bernard Smith

Bernard's career as a Certified Public Accountant began in Richmond in 1950 and continued to Newport News in 1956. He was one of the founding partners of Eggleston, Smith and Company and managed the firm for 11 years until his retirement in 1985. Along the way he was president of the VSCPA, MASAC, the Virginia Group of CPA's, and Chairman of the Virginia State Board for Accountants, receiving many awards during his service.

A lecturer at Christopher Newport College, Bernard taught the first class offered at the school. He was active in the Warwick Lions Club and a Melvin Jones Fellow, Peninsula Sports Club, Peninsula Metro Area YMCA, and Lower Peninsula Chapter of the College of William and Mary Alumni Association. He served as a Deacon and was very active on various committees at North Riverside Baptist Church and was past president of The Chesapeake Resident Council.

Life-long learning was a constant endeavor of Bernard's. An avid traveler, he and Jean traveled the world with close friends, often participating in Elder Hostel programs. He enjoyed bridge, golf, reading, model shipbuilding, and the pleasure that socializing with friends and family brought. More recently he and Jo enjoyed trips to Chetola Lake in Blowing Rock, N.C.

The family wishes to thank the numerous caring staff of The Chesapeake who provided many hours of comfort to him and us. We also wish to thank Dr. John Q. A. Mattern II and the staff at Virginia Oncology Associates for their undivided care and attention.

A memorial service and reception following will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at North Riverside Baptist Church, 311 Selden Road, Newport News.

No Night There

Words by John R. Clements, c.1899
Music by Hart P. Danks (6 Apr 1834 - 20 Nov 1923)

1. In the land of fadeless day
Lies the city foursquare;
It shall never pass away,
And there is no night there.

* Refrain:
God shall wipe away all tears,
There’s no death, no pain, nor fears,
And they count not time by years,
For there is no night there.

2. All the gates of pearl are made,
In the city foursquare;
All the streets with gold are laid,
And there is no night there.

3. All the gates shall never close
To the city foursquare;
There life’s crystal river flows,
And there is no night there.

4. There they need no sunshine bright,
In that city foursquare;
For the Lamb is all the light,
And there is no night there.
