You Don't Own Me

“Take me... or leave me. Accept me - or walk away!
Do not try to make me feel like less of a person,
just because I don't fit your idea of who I should be
and don't try to change me to fit your mold.
If I need to change, I alone will make that decision.”

- Stacey Charter

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We first used this song four years ago yesterday at the suggestion of our Wizard of Wonderment,        Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA:

http://nnhs65.com/04-15-06-NNHS-You-Dont-Own-Me.html

Now that it's The Day After You-Know-What, let's hope They Don't Own YOU!

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Don%27t_Own_Me:

"You Don't Own Me" is the title of a popular song by Lesley Gore from 1964, recorded when Gore was 18 years old. The song reached number two on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart in the United States (just behind The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand").[1]

From Me ('65) of IL - 04/15/10 - "Severe Goof-Off Time Rapidly Approaching":

On Monday, April 19 my sister        Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky ('59 - of NC) and our cousin         Cheryl White Wilson (John Marshall HS - '64 - of VA) are driving out for a much postponed and long overdue visit.  We have convinced them to stay until Monday, April 26.  There shall be much rejoicing and raucous laughter! Beyond Memorial Editions, any work that is accomplished by me during that week will be purely accidental.

From Alice Fowler Edwards ('64) of VA - 04/15/10 - "Sisters":

Hi Carol,

Enjoy your sister time! And tell       Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) hello from me and my sis    Eleanor ('59)... the Fowler sisters! My Eleanor is coming in May and we look forward to lots of long talks, scrabble games and lots of laughs and probably a few tears. How wonderful to have a sister! Don't even worry about the newsletters ... have fun!

Alice Fowler Edwards

Thank you so much, Alice! We fully intend to have great fun! Please do the same with YOUR Eleanor - and give her our warmest regards!

   Speaking of Eleanor.....

From My Sister, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky ('59) of NC - 04/14/10, 10:23 PM - "RE: The Big Trip to Illinois!":

So, are we going to have fun or what? I'll tell you. We are going to have FUN! I'm so excited!

Carol, remember how Cheryl and I gave you a preview when we called one Saturday a few weeks ago and the three of talked? It's going to be like that--only in person with everybody.

Love, Eleanor

BOY HOWDY!!! See you soon, Lady!

From My Cousin, Cheryl White Wilson (John Marshall HS - '64) of VA - 04/14/10, 10:24 PM - "RE: The Big Trip to Illinois!":

Hi, It’s Maeeee!

I am counting the minutes!

..... BTW – 16 April is Charlie Chaplin’s Birthday - 1849  and 18 April 1775 – Paul Revere’s ride  (‘case you didn’t know that).

I feel so honored that everyone is going to such lengths to make us feel welcomed and comfortable.  I just love it!!!

I must go now and practice laughing…………………….

Love,
Cheryl

WILD GIGGLES!!! Don't practice TOO hard, Cheryl! You're going to need a lot of it left over when you get here! I can hardly wait!!!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 04/15/10 - "From the sister (  Nancy Lavender Clarke - NNHS / Andrew Lewis HS, Salem - '67 - of FL) of the late Richard Lavender.":

Hi, Carol:

You will probably get a bit emotional when you read the following message from Richard Lavender's sister.

Here is what she sent to me:

Hi Joe!

This communication has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for me.  I never knew much about my brothers growing up because I went to a children’s home when I was 8.  I didn’t see Dickie again until I was in my late teens and he looked out for me much like a father.  I didn’t even know he played basketball in high school until one of my half sisters told me about it!

I’m enclosing some pictures of him as promised - even one when he was 4 in Newport News!

Name: Richard Wallace Lavender

Born: 05/20/1938

Died: 09/23/1981

Cause of death: Lung Cancer

Location: Lake Worth, Florida

Richard Lavender

The dates seem a bit off, but that’s all I can find in my files.  I don’t have Dickie’s death certificate as I do for most of the rest of the family who has passed on.

Maybe someday you can tell me more about my big brother.

Thank you!

Nancy Clarke

Thank you so very much, Joe - and Nancy!

Based on his birth date, I placed Richard in the Class of 1956, and added these images to their In Memoriam page as well as to Famous Airmen:

http://nnhs65.com/memoriam-all.html

     http://nnhs65.com/memoriam56.html

http://nnhs65.com/famous-airmen.html

And as usual, you were absolutely correct about my reaction, Adonis!

While I was updating Famous Airmen, I added (at long last) Paul's cousin,    S.E. Lewis, Jr. (Central High School, Cape Girardeau, MO - '64) of MI.

Then as long as I had cranked up the scanner (and as you all know, I like to scan almost - but not nearly as much - as I enjoy scrubbing toilets), I added three more images of my darling husband to his profile on Famous Sailors:

   Speaking of Paul.....

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL - 04/15/10 - "Rare WW2 film":

From Mark Hutcherson ('66) of VA - 04/15/10 - " Would you remarry??":

A husband and wife are sitting quietly in bed reading when the wife looks over at him and asks the question....

WIFE: "What would you do if I died? Would you get married again?"

HUSBAND: "Definitely not!"

WIFE: "Why not? Don't you like being married?"

HUSBAND: "Of course I do.."

WIFE: "Then why wouldn't you remarry? "

HUSBAND: "Okay, okay, I'd get married again."

WIFE: "You would?" (with a hurt look)

HUSBAND: (makes audible groan)

WIFE: "Would you live in our house?"

HUSBAND: "Sure, it's a great house."

WIFE: "Would you sleep with her in our bed?"

HUSBAND: "Where else would we sleep?"

WIFE: "Would you let her drive my car?"

HUSBAND: "Probably, it is almost new."

WIFE: "Would you replace my pictures with hers?"

HUSBAND: "That would seem like the proper thing to do."

WIFE: "Would you give her my jewelry?"

HUSBAND: "No, I'm sure she'd want her own."

WIFE: "Would you take her golfing with you?

HUSBAND: "Yes, those are always good times."

WIFE: "Would she use my clubs?

HUSBAND: "No, she's left-handed."

WIFE:--

HUSBAND:

OH, WOW!!! She looks a little under the weather, doesn't she?!?

   Thanks, Jacob!

Aphrodite - Before and After

From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 04/14/10 - "BET YOU'LL SEND IT!!":

68% will send this on...
Should be a 100%

BET YOU'LL SEND IT!!

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG,

OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,

AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS,

ONE NATION UNDER GOD,

INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I was asked to send this on if I agree, or delete if I don't.

It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God.

Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is
such a problem in having 'In God! We Trust' on our money and
having 'God' in the Pledge of Allegiance.

I believe it's time we stand up for what we believe!

If you agree, pass this on, if not, delete.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Thank you, Glenn - I DO agree!

Thank you, Shari; untimely deaths are always disconcerting.

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL - 04/15/10 - "The Rat Pack":

What a group!!!!
This show was at Kiel Opera House in St Louis June '65.
Carson hosted....
Carson had the Tonight Show.
The Rat Pack were playing Vegas.
This is supposed to be the ONLY time Carson sang in public.
Quincy Jones was conducting the Count Basie band, and he is visible in the background.

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes - 04/15/10:

Paying Bills

My wife and I, both graduate students, recently celebrated the arrival of our first child. At my wife's insistence, we had paid our entire medical bill and were now worried about meeting other payments.

We were discussing our sad financial situation one evening when our son demanded a diaper change.

As my wife leaned over the baby's crib, I heard her mutter, "The only thing in the house that's paid for, and it leaks."

You Don't Own Me

Words and Music by John Madara and David White Tricker

Recorded by Leslie Gore (b. 02 May 1946), 1964

You don't own me,
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me,
Don't say I can't go with other boys

And don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display, 'cause

You don't own me,
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me,
Don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay

Oh, I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you

I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please

And don't tell me what to do
Oh don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display

I don't tell you what to say
Oh don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you

I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want …
