04/13/21 - NNHS Newsletter - Do You Love Me?

“Serious and intense people, they drain you. But someone who's an idiot, like myself, they're fun. You either hate me or you love me.”

Pauly Shore

(b. 01 Feb 1968)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

As difficult as it is to believe, I think we have never used this Golden Oldie anywhere on the site before.

BONUS - Do You Love Me? - The Contours

"Do You Love Me" is a 1962 hit single recorded by The Contours for Motown's Gordy Records label. Written and produced by Motown CEO Berry Gordy, Jr., "Do You Love Me?" was the Contours' only Top 40 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. Notably, the record achieved this feat twice, once in 1962 and again in 1988. A main point of the song is to name the Mashed PotatoThe Twist, and a variation of the title "I like it like that", as "You like it like this", and many other fad dances of the 1960s.

The song is noted for the spoken recitation heard in the introduction which goes: "You broke my heart / 'Cause I couldn't dance / You didn't even want me around / And now I'm back / To let you know / I can really shake 'em down."

The song has a false ending.

Do You Love Me?

Written by Berry Gordy, Jr. (b. 28 Nov 1929)
Recorded by
The Contours, 1962

You broke my heart
'Cause I couldn't dance
You didn't even want me around
And now I'm back
To let you know
I can really shake 'em down
Do you love me?
(I can really move)
Do you love me?
(I'm in the groove)
Now do you love me?
(Do you love me)
Now that I can dance
Watch me now, hey
(Work, work)
Ah, work it all baby
(Work, work)
Well, you're drivin' me crazy
(Work, work)
With a little bit of soul now
I can mash-potato
(I can mash-potato)
And I can do the twist
(I can do the twist)
Now tell me baby
(Tell me baby)
Do you like it like this
(Do you like it like this)
Tell me
(Tell me)
Tell me
Do you love me?
(Do you love me)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me)
Now, do you love me?
(Do you love me)
Now that I can dance
Watch me now, hey
(Work, work)
Ah, shake…
