04/11/20 - NNHS Newsletter - Holy Saturday

I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. Surely against me is he turned; he turneth his hand against me all the day. My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones. He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail. He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old. He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy. Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer. He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

 - Lamentations 3: 1-9 (KJV)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We're getting better at celebrating this day here together every year...

BONUS - Palestrina's Lamentations

HOMEWORK:

From http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/holy-saturday:

Many Christians in the United States observe Holy Saturday, which falls between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It commemorates the day when Jesus Christ lay in the tomb after his death, according to the Christian bible. It is also known as Easter Eve and is the last day of Lent.

Many Christians in the United States attend an Easter vigil service on Holy Saturday. They remember Holy Saturday as the day when Jesus lay in his tomb. An Easter candle is lit in some homes, particularly among families who cannot attend the Easter vigil services. Easter vigil prayers are also made on this day. Baptisms are held during some church services on Holy Saturday.

Many American families prepare for Easter Sunday celebrations on the Saturday before Easter. Children decorate eggs with paint, crayon, water colors, stickers and other material. These eggs are often placed in Easter baskets. Some people buy chocolate eggs to eat around this time of the year. Many people of Mexican descent who live in Los Angeles in California celebrate Holy Saturday with a colorful ceremony known as the Blessing of the Animals.

...Congregation members are sprinkled with blessed water in some churches in the United States. This blessed water symbolizes purification and baptism. Candles that are used for Easter vigil services represent the light of Jesus Christ, and that he brings light into darkness.

HEALTH UPDATE:

1.    From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 04/10/20, @ 6:51 PM - "   Harry Covert ('57) of MD":

A full day in service to Brother Harry. His release from hospital was an ordeal due to delays I won’t specify. I had to get a jump start on the Murano. Harry’s Xray showed an abscess - like he needs that too, a tooth extraction scheduled Monday. Dr. Harvey Levy’s team with Dr. Patel was marvelous, gentle, understanding. Meds were a fiscal challenge, got him home, Nicholas my chauffeur, lived with the delays, I got Harry situated, bed and room squared away, meds taken and tuna on Italian bread with pickles, sent him to sleep. Will see him in the morning unless something intervenes.

WOW! Thank you, Norm, we're still praying! Thank you for the update. Give Harry our love!
