From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Pacific_%28musical%29:

South Pacific is a 1949 musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan. The story draws from James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book Tales of the South Pacific, weaving together characters and elements from several of its stories into a single plotline. The musical won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. The issue of racial prejudice was sensitively and candidly explored at a time when few musicals engaged in serious social commentary.

South Pacific is considered by some to be one of the greatest Broadway musicals.[1][2] Several of its songs, including "Bali Ha'i", "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair", "Some Enchanted Evening", "Happy Talk", "Younger than Springtime", and "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy", have become worldwide standards. The Broadway production was nominated for and won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Libretto. It is the only musical production ever to have won all four Tony Awards for acting. The show was a critical and box office hit and has since enjoyed many successful revivals and tours and spawned a 1958 film and other adaptations...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Pacific_%28film%29:

South Pacific is a 1958 film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific, and based on James A. Michener's Tales of the South Pacific. The film was directed by Joshua Logan and starred Rossano Brazzi, Mitzi Gaynor, John Kerr and Ray Walston in the leading roles with Juanita Hall as Bloody Mary, the part that she had played in the original stage production...

Metropolitan Opera star Giorgio Tozzi provided the singing voice for the role of Emile de Becque in the film...

  From Marc (Jody) Glazer ('65) of GA - 04/07/15 - "   Allen Groshong ('66) (11 Feb 1948 - 08 Apr 1968)":

Hi Carol.

Hope you're feeling good today and even better tomorrow.

May I suggest a remembrance in your blog for my friend, Allen Groshong, Navy corpsman. Killed April 8, 1968 at Khe Sanh saving the life of one of our Marines.
Thanks for consideration.

Marc Glazer

Thank you so much, Marc! That's a wonderful idea - and especially appropriate on this, the 47th anniversary of his death.

In fact, my original 2000 concept - which still holds - is that the In Memoriam pages serve as places where we can all leave remembrances of our friends.

Shorter notes are placed right on these pages, such as the one previously submitted for Allen by         Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN. Longer messages such as the one posted for him by his sister, the late   Sarah Groshong ('61), or the one posted for Brenda Phillips Schweida Bloxom (02 Sept 1949 - 25 July 1995) by her sister,   Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA, are attached via links.

As Allen went to Woodrow Wilson and I to Magruder, and our paths never crossed at NNHS, I unfortunately never had the privilege of knowing this heroic man, but I would be honored to post such a remembrance written by you or anyone else.

In fact, I would welcome any and all remembrances concerning any of our departed friends. That's why we all came together in the first place - to remember!

From My Friend, LaMerle, of VA - 04/07/15:

This Nearly Was Mine

Music by Richard Rodgers
(28 June 1902 - 30 Dec 1979)

Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II
(12 July 1895 - 23 Aug 1960)

From South Pacific, 1949

One dream in my heart,
One love to be livin' for,
One love to be livin' for
This nearly was mine.

One girl for my dream,
One partner in paradise,
This promise of paradise
This nearly was mine.

Close to my heart she came
Only to fly away,
Only to fly as day flies from moonlight
Now, now I'm alone,
Still dreamin' of paradise,
Still sayin' that paradise
Once nearly was mine.

I'll keep rememberin' kisses
From lips I've never owned,
And all that lovely adventures
That we have never known.

One dream in my heart,
One love to be livin' for,
One love to be livin' for
This nearly was mine.

Close to my heart she came
Only to fly away,
Only to fly as day flies from moonlight.

Now, now I'm alone,
Still a-dreamin' of paradise,
Still sayin' that paradise
Once nearly was mine!
