Church Street, Norfolk, VA

On with the dance! let joy be unconfined;
No sleep till morn, when Youth and Pleasure meet
To chase the glowing hours with flying feet.

- George Gordon, Lord Byron, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, 1812-1818
(22 Jan 1788 - 19 Apr 1824)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme was first suggested by our Wizard of Wonderment,  Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA thirteen years ago. If you can still hear it - as I myself cannot - it has one of the coolest midi files ever attached to it.

BONUS - Quarter to Three - Gary U.S. Bonds, 1961

1.    From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 04/05/20, 6:29 PM - "   Harry Covert ('57) of MD - Enduring love.":
Webdoll, I have been, by necessity, off the "net" communicating with the Typhoon fraternity/sorority for an extended time. You have not given up on me in so many years of service. Let me update the Leonard Zimet 1957 Trombone section of the Typhoon marching band. Harry Covert ('57) and his silver Conn t-bone are facing major changes this week. The horn is on standby in my basement, Harry's cancer is attacking him viciously. His baby brother Norm ('61) is trying to keep him in line, but he needs prayers to get body and soul together.

We reminisced the other day about playing Saturday morning pickup football on the grass and concrete strip adjacent to the home ec classrooms on 32nd street. Oh, the bumps and bruises with no pads, couple of us with leather helmets! The camaraderie! I will update Harry's status with good news, I trust.

To you. Webdoll, prayers for your recovery this Palm Sunday.

MORE YIKES! Thank you, Norm, we're continuing with our prayers and happy thoughts! Give Harry our love, keep us in the loop, please, and thank you for your prayers on my behalf! I seem to be much improved.

From Lynn Walker Brothers ('65) of VA - 04/01/20, 12:57 PM - "55-Year Class Reunion for the Class of 1965":

March 31, 2020

Dear Classmates,

Due to the current situation with the coronavirus, it is necessary to cancel our 55-Year Class Reunion.

We plan on rescheduling this event in the fall. We will keep you posted.

I heard this quote today which seemed so appropriate for the time,“What you focus on, you create more of,” so instead of focusing on the negative, find positive ways of dealing with the anxiety created by this virus, that we are all experiencing, and stay safe. Hope to see everyone in the fall.

Your Reunion Committee

QUITE UNDERSTANDABLE! Thank you so much, Lynn!

Quarter to Three

SOME NOTES: Daddy "G" and the Church Street Five were from Norfolk, as was Gary Bonds.
Daddy "G" was Gene Barge, and the Church Street was, indeed the one in Norfolk.
Those songs and many others with the "Norfolk Sound" were produced and often written
by Frank Guida, who was Norfolk's version of Phil Spector.

- Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 03/08/05
WOWZERONI!  Thanks, Dave!

Written by
Gene Barge, Frank Guida (26 May 1922 - 19 May 2007), and Joseph Royster

Recorded by Gary U.S. Bonds (b. 06 June 1939), 1961

Don't you know that I danced, I danced till a quarter to three
With the help, last night, of Daddy G.
He was swingin' on the sax like a nobody could
And I was dancin' all over the room.
Oh, don't you know the people were dancin' like they were mad,
it was the swingin'est band they had, ever had.
It was the swingin'est song that could ever be,
It was a night with Daddy G.
Let me tell you now,
I never had it so good
Yeah, and I know you never could
Until you get hip with that jive
And take a band like the
Church Street Five.
Oh, don't you know that I danced,
I danced till a quarter to three
With the help last night of Daddy G.
Everybody was as happy as they could be
And they were swingin' with Daddy G.
Blow Daddy!
Let me tell you now,
I never had it so good
Yeah and I know you never could
Until you get hip with that jive
And take a band like the Church Street Five.
Oh, don't you know that I danced,
I danced till a quarter to three
With the help last night of Daddy G.
He was swingin' on the sax like a nobody could,
and I was dancin' all over the room
Oh, don't you know the
Dance, do bee wa dah
Dance, do bee wah dah
You can dance, do bee wah dah,
You can dance, dance, dance
