04/05/09 - NNHS Newsletter - Palm Sunday

On the next day much people that were come to the feast,
when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him,
and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel
that cometh in the name of the Lord.

- John 12: 12-13 (KJV)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We are a varied lot, and many of you will not be celebrating today, but for many of you, today marks the beginning of Holy Week, and even if we're not personally observing the day, our Typhoon Family tries to mark all such occasions:

From Patti Johnson Stowe ('62) of FL - 04/04/09 - "Warwick Gardens":

Carol,

I think the website is awesome; you have done an amazing job in keeping this going.  I love reading it every day.  It brings back some great memories.  I grew up in Warwick Gardens on Briarfield Road, three houses behind the skating rink.  At my age, I can't remember the names of all the people in that neighborhood, but I do remember the faces.  Can anyone help me with the flashbacks and names.  I graduated from Newport News High in 1962.

Patti Johnson Stowe

Thanks so much, Patti! Let's see if we can find out!

From Eric Huffstutler (Bethel HS - '75) of VA - 04/04/09 - "Re:      Janice McCain Rose ('65 - of VA) ...":

Janice, for you to stick this out with Fred AND follow up with everything one must do to nurse him back to health that you are doing at home... I have only two words for it:

TRUE LOVE!

Eric S. Huffstutler
Richmond, VA

   AMEN! Thanks, Eric!

From Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN - 04/04/09 - "re: leather dresses":

Hi Carol

Ron Miller ('59 - of NC) said that a man begins to think irrationally when he sees a woman in a leather dress because she smells like a new golf bag.  I do vaguely remember that, even though it's been too many years to think about since I played golf but a woman in a new leather dress would also have that new car smell which would evoke the same feelings he describes.  Sadly though, since I fully retired (except for "honey-do's"), I probably will not enjoy that smell again.  Oh well, as Doris Day's song says, "Que Sera, Sera."

   GIGGLES!

By-the-way, her song may have been released in 1956, but she sang it first in the 1955 film, The Man Who Knew Too Much, by my all time favorite film director, Alfred Hitchcock.

Ummmm, Sydney, I was all set to chalk this up to a typo and switch it, but I just double-checked with the Internet Movie Data Base, and they insist that Hitchcock's classic film was released in 1956:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049470/

So with apologies, I'll let it stand.

Oh, and speaking of retirement, I loved the retirement picture from         David Whitley ('67) of VA.  I printed it and now have it sitting on my computer desk.

Go Blue and Gold,
Sydney Dearing

MORE GIGGLES! Good for you, Sydney! Thanks so much!

From My Cousin, Jim Atkinson (John Randolph Tucker HS - '77) of AZ - 04/04/09 - "Yeah, Yeah":

I suppose everyone's reactions were predictable enough.  My world is very different from all of my largely urbanite relatives.  Truth is, I am very passionate about my interests and where I live in spite of what many would view as insurmountable hardship.  It's really hard not to use the "weenie" verb right about now but I suppose being "diametrically opposed" to urban views is sufficient...

Jim Sweetie, it takes all kinds to run the world! Thanks so much for doing what most of the rest of us would prefer NOT to do!

And the beauty of it all is that you love what you do, and that is purely delightful!

But yes, I AM THE Weinus Maximus Biggus Wimpus - and it just keeps getting worse.....

From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Warsaw HS / Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - 04/04/09 - "  Dad's death date":

Dear Carol,

Loved the Doris Day newsletter, but I want to make one tiny correction.  You have my father's date of death as 1906; which, of course, was seven years before he was born!!  A miracle, perhaps?  But how would one know?

Love to all,
Jean

EEEK!!! You should have seen it earlier - it was even worse! Thanks, Jean, I appreciate your catching that for me!

From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Warsaw HS / Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - 04/04/09 - "rest of email":

Dad died on May 11, 2006, exactly 20 days after     Mom      You ('65 - of IL) and       Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of IL),       Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) , and three of your children -        Joshua (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL - '95) of IL),           Dale (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL - '02 - of MA), and         Adrienne (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL - of IL) - came to both funeral services, exactly 3 weeks apart, same time and location. And I will be eternally grateful.

And we ourselves were so thankful than we lived near enough to attend!

And today is the 10th anniversary of  Tom's (Mallory's) death. But 10 years ago, it was Easter Sunday and, as you know, he died at church from his first and only heart attack. Now      Janice McCain Rose ('65 - of VA) and    Judy (Phillips) Allen ('66 - of VA) know why I pray for them every day, even though I don't know either one of them.

Love to all,
Jean

I doubt I'll ever forget the shock I felt when your mama called me to tell me that news, Jean! Thank you so much for this note!

FINALLY:

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 04/04/09 - "When it is time to turn in your license":

When it is time to turn in one's license!!!!!!!

An old man and woman from Virginia were on the way to Greenville, NC and stopped at McDonalds in Farmville just off of 264 East bypass recently and did not know that they hit this deer!!

Someone in McDonalds had to tell them ...the old man said he noticed that the car was starting to run a little hot the last few miles.

   YOWZERONI-WILD GIGGLES! Thanks, Joyce!

The Holy City

Text by Frederick E. Weatherly, 1892
(1849-1929)

Music by
Michael Maybrick - a.k.a. Stephen Adams
(31 Jan 1841 - 26 Aug 1913)

Last night I lay a-sleeping, there came a dream so fair,
I stood in old Jerusalem beside the temple there.
I heard the children singing and ever as they sang,
Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang.
Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang.

Refrain
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!

And then me thought my dream was changed, the streets no longer rang,
Hushed were the glad Hosannas the little children sang.
The sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill,
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.

Refrain
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!

And once again the scene was changed; new earth there seemed to be;
I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea;
The light of God was on its streets, the gates were open wide,
And all who would might enter and no one was denied.
No need of moon or stars by night, or sun to shine by day;
It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.
It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.

Refrain
Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!
