04/03/18 - NNHS Newsletter - Johnny Holland

John James Holland, III
(d. 01 Apr 2018)

Newport News High School Class of 1961 and 1962

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
   I was saddened to read this Tuesday morning of the death of another Typhoon.
Johnny Holland, Class of 1961 and 1962, husband of Gwen Howard Holland (Warwick HS - '61) of VA, and brother of Betty Holland Wilhem, passed away at home in Newport News on Easter Sunday, April 01, 2018 at the age of 75.

   I really enjoyed talking with Johnny at the 50-Year Reunion for the Class of 1962 back in 2012. The last time I spoke with him was on May 15, 2015, when he called and together we created a page for Holland's Grocery on Our Old Stomping Grounds. I was just thinking of him last week; perhaps this is why.

To the family of Johnny Holland. We were classmates at NNHS. Johnny through the years of school dinners was always a ray of sunshine with interesting things to say to all of us. Johnny always talked to everyone in the room and made them feel important to him. Now he is at peace.

Rock of Ages

Words by Augustus Montague Toplady, 1763 (first published in The Gospel Magazine, 1775)
(04 Nov 1740 - 11 Aug 1778)

Music by Thomas Hastings
(15 Oct 1784 - 15 May 1872)

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee,
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save me from its guilt and pow'r.

Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked come, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Savior, or I die!

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
