03/31/14 - NNHS Newsletter - Traces

“You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.”

- David Harkins
(b. 14 Nov 1958)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

The theme of today's Newsletter popped into my head the other day and refuses to leave.

From My #6 Son, Dale Harty, (Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL - '02) of NC (en route to CA by way of MA and NY) - 03/30/14 - "The Morning After":

First of all, don't panic - everyone is okay! No one was hurt at all!

You saw the pictures of the snow at Niagara Falls? As we were on a New York Throughway nearing Buffalo more snow began to fall - in fact, an inch or two fell atop a 1/2 inch of ice. We were supposed to be spending the night in Pennsylvania, but the road became very slippery and dangerous. I had just said a prayer that we would all be kept safe from the storm. No sooner than I had said "Amen." than I hit a patch of the black ice and knew that I had mere seconds to choose between three options. The one I picked resulted in our Ford Expedition flipping and rolling over in a gulley.

The      three children (Buckley, Claire, and Evey) were all protected by their car safety seats, but the windshield and right side windows were smashed, as well as the top of the vehicle. The snow began to blow in on us all.  The other two vehicles in our caravan thought it might have been us who left the road, so they stopped and called - enabling us to find our phones (which we thought had flown out during the crash).

A young college student named Michael witnessed what had happened. He was heading home to visit his girlfriend, and was very surprised to see that highway in such bad shape, as it's always the first to be cleared. Seeing our plight, he graciously suggested we take the three little children up to his car where they'd be safe, warm, and protected from the falling snow.

An ambulance arrived to find a truck with three car seats and no people, so the attendants were astonished and confused for a while.

We spent the night at the Angola Motel in Angola, NY after that same Good Samaritan, Michael, paid to put all 11 of us up for the night!

The car was totaled, and we only had liability insurance, but between the other two vehicles there was enough seating for 13 people and we only had 11 people in our party, so that worked out well and we can continue on to California. So now we have no car, but hey, think of the gas we are saving!

YOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI! What a miraculous protection was granted you! Praise the Lord for his tender mercies - and thank you, Dale!

From My Friend, Tina, of NC - 03/30/14 - "Smack a Snowman":

AMEN! Thank you, Tina! As much as I love snowmen, you can imagine how very much I may be agreeing with this sentiment right now!

Traces

Written by Buddy Buie, James R. Cobb (b. 05 Feb 1944), and Emory Gordy, Jr. (b. 25 Dec 1944)

Recorded by The Classics IV, 1969

Faded photographs, covered now with lines and creases
Tickets torn in half, memories in bits and pieces
Traces of love, long ago, that didn't work out right
Traces of love

Ribbons from her hair, souvenirs of days together
The ring she used to wear, pages from an old love letter
Traces of love, long ago, that didn't work out right
Traces of love with me, tonight

I close my eyes and say a prayer
That in her heart she'll find
A trace of love still there somewhere, ohhh oh

Traces of hope in the night
That she'll come back and dry
These, traces of tears
From my eyes
Ohh oh oh ohhhh
