03/28/19 - NNHS Newsletter - Only the Lonely

“One friend in a lifetime is much; two are many; three are hardly possible.”

 - Henry Brooks Adams

(16 Feb 1838 - 27 Mar 1919)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

It's time again for the great Roy Orbison.

BONUS - Only the Lonely - Roy Orbison

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_the_Lonely:

"Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)" is a 1960 song written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson.[1] Produced by Fred Foster for Monument Records it became the first major hit for Orbison. As an operatic rock ballad, it was a sound unheard of at the time except It's Now or Never by Elvis Presley, described by the New York Times as expressing "a clenched, driven urgency".[1] It is seen as a seminal event in the evolution of Rock and Roll. Released as a 45rpm single by Monument Records in May 1960, "Only the Lonely" went to No. 2 on the United States Billboard pop music charts on 25 July 1960 (blocked by Brenda Lee's "I'm Sorry") & No. 14 on the Billboard R&B charts.[2] "Only the Lonely" reached Number One in the United Kingdom, a position it achieved on 20 October 1960, staying there for two weeks (out of a total of 24 weeks spent on the UK singles chart from 28 July 1960).[3] the personnel who were featured on the original recording included Orbison's session regulars Buddy Harman on drums, Floyd Cramer on piano and Bob Moore on bass with Hank Garland and Harold Bradley on guitar.

In 1999, "Only the Lonely" was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award.[citation needed] In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked it No. 232 on their list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time...[citation needed]

Nighttime will soon call and the darkness will fall. I spent the day on my feet, but the day was kept busy and I'll get a good night's sleep. And if I don't wake tomorrow, there should be no sorrow. For my heart is focused right, and what I'll inherit will be out of sight.

Just a thought, I would bet 99% that I'll see you all tomorrow. But we just can never be sure. So have a good night and here are a few pictures of our beautiful world at sunset. KEEP FAITH STRONG AND YOU CAN'T GO WRONG!

     Thank you, Jimmy!

Only the Lonely

Written by Roy Orbison (23 Apr 1936 - 06 Dec 1988) and Joe Melson (b. May 1935), 1960

Dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah
Ooh-yay-yay-yay-yeah
Oh-oh-oh-oh-wah
Only the lonely

Only the lonely (dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah)
Know the way I feel tonight (ooh-yay-yay-yay-yeah)
Only the lonely (dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah)
Know this feelin’ ain’t right (dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah)

There goes my baby
There goes my heart
They’re gone forever
So far apart

But only the lonely
Know why
I cry
Only the lonely

Dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah
Ooh-yay-yay-yay-yeah
Oh-oh-oh-oh-wah
Only the lonely

Only the lonely
Know the heartaches I’ve been through
Only the lonely
Know I cried and cried for you

Maybe tomorrow
A new romance
No more sorrow
But that’s the chance - you gotta take
If your lonely heart breaks
Only the lonely

Dum-dum-dum-dumdy-doo-wah
