03/27/14 - NNHS Newsletter - Hey There

The pain of love is the pain of being alive.
It is a perpetual wound.

 - Maureen Duffy
      (b. 21 Oct 1933)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's song is brought to you directly by Rosemary Clooney, who delights in singing it in my ear each night just as I'm trying to fall asleep.  Thanks for the lullabies, Rosie - I think......

BONUS - Hey There - Rosemary Clooney

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_There:

"Hey There" is a show tune from the musical play The Pajama Game, written by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. It was published in 1954.

It was subsequently recorded by a number of artists. The recording by Rosemary Clooney reached #1 on Billboard's chart in 1954. Another version was also recorded about the same time by Sammy Davis, Jr., reaching #16 on Billboard's retail chart. The song (counting all recorded versions) also reached #1 on the Cash Box chart in 1954.

In the context of the show, Sid sings it to a recording device, telling himself that he's foolish to continue his advances to Babe. He plays the tape back, and after responding to his own comments, sings a duet with himself.

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 03/26/14 - "YOU":

Hello Carol,

Thank you for the birthday Hidi Ho.

Thank
Paul for telling me why none of my pens seem to work these days - I'm not upside down!

Thank you for the update on your health. I've been worried but we can handle a little bone on bone. Of course you'll be shorter but Paul has that covered. Why do they always put the good stuff up high?

Thank you for being you, I love you.

Linda May

Thank you so much, Linda May! I was horrified when I entered the eighth grade and discovered that I seemed to have stopped growing at 5' 2-1/4". I always wanted to be tall.  I thought I would get there eventually; I was just slow. Nobody ever told that was never going to happen.  The last time I had "da noive" to measure I was down to 5' 1/2". I am not amused.....

I love you, too, Linda May!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 03/26/14:

God created the donkey and said to him: "You will work unceasingly from sunrise to sunset carrying burdens on your back. You will eat grass, you will have no intelligence , and you will live 50 years. You will be a donkey."

The donkey answered: I will be a donkey, but to live 50 years is too much. Give me only 20 years, please."

God granted his wish.

God created the dog and said to him, "You will be a dog. You will guard the house of man. You will be his best friend. You will eat the scraps that he gives you and you will live 25 years. You will be a dog."

The dog answered: "Master, to live 25 years is too much. Give me only 10 years, please."

God granted his wish.

God created the monkey and said to him, "You will be a monkey. You will swing from branch to branch doing tricks. You will be amusing and you will live 20 years. You will be a monkey."

The monkey answered: "Master, to live 20 years is too much; give me only 10 years, please."

God granted his wish.

Finally God created the man and said to him: "You will be a man, the only rational creature on the face of the earth. You will use your intelligence to become master over all animals. You will dominate the world and you will live 20 years."

Man responded: "I will be a man, but to live only 20 years is very little. Please give me the 30 years that the donkey refused, the 15 years that the dog did not want, and the 10 years the monkey refused.

God granted his wish. And since then, man lives 20 years as a man, marries and spends 30 years like a donkey, working and carrying all the burdens on his back. Then when his children are gone, he lives 15 years like a dog, taking care of the house and eating whatever is given to him, so that when he is old, he can retire and live 10 years like a monkey, going from house to house, from one son or daughter to another, doing tricks to amuse his grandchildren.

Hey There

Words and Music by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross for "The Pajama Game"

Recorded by Rosemary Clooney, 1954

Hey there
You with the stars in your eyes
Love's never made a fool of you
You used to be too wise.

Hey there
You on that high-flying cloud
Though he won't throw a crumb to you
You think someday he'll come to you.

Better forget him
Him with his nose in the air
He's got you dancing on a string
Break it and he won't care

Won't you take this advice
I hand you like a mother
Or are you not seeing things too clear?
Are you too much in love to hear?
Is it all going in one ear
And out the other?

(repeat last verse)

Hey There! Hey There!
Hey There!.......
