When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

“If you smile when no one else is around, you really mean it.”

 - Andy Rooney

(14 Jan 1919 - 04 Nov 2011)

Dear Friends and  Schoolmates,

We're continuing with our Irish themes today - mostly because I'm still in the mood.

BONUS #1 - When Irish Eyes Are Smiling - Bing Crosby

BONUS #2 - When Irish Eyes Are Smiling - Dennis Morgan - from Tear Gas Squad (1940)

BONUS #3 - When Irish Eyes Are Smiling - Celtic Woman (Méav)

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Irish_Eyes_Are_Smiling:

"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is a lighthearted song in tribute to Ireland. Its lyrics were written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr., set to music composed by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of The Isle O' Dreams, and Olcott sang the song in the show. It was first published in 1912, at a time when songs in tribute to a romanticized Ireland were very numerous and popular both in Britain and the United States. During the First World War the famous tenor John McCormack recorded the song.

The song continued to be a familiar standard for generations. Decades later it was used as the opening song on the radio show Duffy's Tavern. The song has been recorded on over 200 singles and albums and by many famous singers, including Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, and Roger Whittaker.[1]

HEALTH UPDATE:

1.    From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 03/18/20, 6:46 PM - "   Harry Covert ('57) of MD":

What a puzzler: Brother Harry had an apparent stroke and was unconscious on floor for several hours, awakened and could not move for about three more. Finally I got there and he had managed to get on the side of the bed. The medics were wonderful, confirmed he had all the apparent signs of a stroke. The Lower Tidmarsh team performed a CTScan, which as usual was inconclusive. He had improvement, was treated for low blood sugar, dehydration and they decided not to admit him because he was 80 and might contract the coronavirus. Tell me about death panels! I got him home with some food and cleanup fixup at my barber John's emporium. Unbelievable.

YOWZERS! Thank you, Norm - keep us posted!

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Words by Chauncey Olcott (21 July 1858 – 18 Mar 1932) and George Graff, Jr. (05 Aug 1886 - 24 Jan 1973), 1912

Music by Ernest Ball (22 July 1878 – 03 May 1927), 1912

When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it's like a morning spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.
There's a tear in your eye, and I'm wondering why,
For it never should be there at all.
With such power in your smile, sure a stone you'd beguile,
So there's never a teardrop should fall.
When your sweet lilting laughter's like some fairy song,
And your eyes twinkle bright as can be,
You should laugh all the while and all other times smile,
And now smile a smile for me.

Chorus:
When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it's like a morning spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.
