“If you smile when no one else is around, you really mean it.”

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_Irish_Eyes_Are_Smiling:

"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is a lighthearted song in tribute to Ireland. Its lyrics were written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr., set to music composed by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of The Isle O' Dreams, and Olcott sang the song in the show. It was first published in 1912, at a time when songs in tribute to a romanticized Ireland were very numerous and popular both in Britain and the United States. During the First World War the famous tenor John McCormack recorded the song.

The song continued to be a familiar standard for generations. Decades later it was used as the opening song on the radio show Duffy's Tavern. The song has been recorded on over 200 singles and albums and by many famous singers, including Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, and Roger Whittaker.[1]

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 03/18/17 - "Tom Hanks and the Diamonds":

Tom Hanks and the Diamonds

This is so great. I didn't know Tom Hanks father was the lead singer of the Diamonds.

THIS WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE, Tom Hanks' Father:

If you were alive in 1957, and old enough to enjoy Rock and Roll, you will probably remember the group, "The Diamonds" who had just launched their super hit "Little Darlin' ".

For you that are too young to remember - it was a time when the performers were happy, enjoying themselves, respecting their fans, dressed appropriately and their lyrics could be understood.

They did not feel obligated to scream, eat the microphone, mumble inaudible lyrics or trash the set.

In 1957, The Diamonds had a hit with "Little Darlin". 47 years later, they were requested to perform at Atlantic City ...

This link leads to both performances.

Watch the first one then scroll down for the new one 47 years later.

Tom Hanks father is much better looking than Tom, and even better looking with age. In the linked videos Tom Hank's father is the lead singer on the left. He still has it! Hope you enjoy.

47 years apart 2 Performances --

He's the guy on the left with the high-pitched voice.

   WOWZERS! Thank you, Joyce!

From Joan Lauterbach Krause ('60) of VA - 03/18/17 - "Mowing Grass! This is a KEEPER":

Happy Saturday afternoon. I too thought this is a Keeper…. Enjoy

Joan

Mowing Grass! This is a KEEPER. Priceless. . ..

I can't think of a better word than "PRICELESS" FOR THIS. . .

Here's a picture of an Army soldier in Iraq with his tiny 'plot' of grass in front of his tent.

It's heartwarming! Here is a soldier in Iraq, with a big sand box. He asked his wife to send him dirt (U.S. soil), fertilizer, and some grass seed so that he can have the sweet aroma, and feel the grass grow beneath his feet. When the men of the squadron have a mission that they are going on, they take turns walking through the grass and the American soil -- to bring them good luck.

Of all the things he could have asked his wife to send to him from home...........he asked for American soil. WOW.

If you notice, he is even cutting the grass with a pair of scissors. Sometimes we are in such a hurry that we don't stop and think about the little things that we take for granted.

Upon receiving this, say a little prayer for our soldiers that give and give (and give up) so unselfishly for us.

   AMEN! Thank you, Joan!

“Congratulations to each and every one of you for the concert last night in New York and vice versa.”

- Eugene Ormandy, conductor
(18 Nov 1899 - 12 Mar
1985)

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 02/27/17 - "Good Stuff (#19 in a Series of 19)":

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Words by Chauncey Olcott (21 July 1858 – 18 Mar 1932) and George Graff, Jr. (05 Aug 1886 - 24 Jan 1973), 1912

Music by Ernest Ball (22 July 1878 – 03 May 1927), 1912

When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it's like a morning spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.
There's a tear in your eye, and I'm wondering why,
For it never should be there at all.
With such power in your smile, sure a stone you'd beguile,
So there's never a teardrop should fall.
When your sweet lilting laughter's like some fairy song,
And your eyes twinkle bright as can be,
You should laugh all the while and all other times smile,
And now smile a smile for me.

Chorus:
When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it's like a morning spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.
