On My Own

Alone, alone, all, all alone,
Alone on a wide wide sea!
And never a saint took pity on
My soul in agony.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Dear Friends and  Schoolmates,

   Today we're revisiting a Newsletter from three years ago today (because not only is it simpler for me, but it's one of my favorite songs from one of my very favorite shows!):

PRAYER REQUEST:

      From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 03/18/10, 3:27 PM - "Prayer Request":

A friend of mine, Willa, is having surgery tomorrow, for a rotator cuff and ligament tear.
If you include her tonight in your prayers I would appreciate it. Her surgery was initially scheduled for the 23rd, and she got a phone call this morning asking if they could reschedule her instead the 19th.

Thank you,
Shari

   YOWZERS!  Thanks for letting me know, Shari! I did, and I added Willa to our Prayer Roll so that others could do so as well - if a bit after the fact:

Patty lives in Hampton!  Sorry I left that out!

    From Bill Black ('66) of GA - 03/18/10 - " Day of the Second Joke":

A little humor for all us old geezers...

This is from one of the guys I worked with at WQRK, Norfolk back in the seventies.  He lives at The Beach again, but it's just a coincidence he mentions "Ocean View".  I don't remember going into any bars / restaurants at Ocean View, although there was that place on the water right where the Bridge Tunnel meets Willoughby Spit  ( "King Neptune's"? ) and at the other end of Ocean View Boulevard ( Is that the street? Once again, the memory fails... ) was "Blackbeard's", or was that "The Jolly Roger"...  I'm hearing Bob Calvert's voice on WGH saying "and Saturday night, it's Tidewater's Big Deal... Bill Deal and the Rhondels...playing at the Jolly Roger..." so I get even more confused.

Some of the rest of you might remember Ocean View in your wilder days.   Although, Sharon, I always suspected you were more of a "Blue Lite" in Newport News girl, anyway...

But Phil's joke was pretty funny to read, and the second reason I go anywhere in LaGrange is because of the hired help.  The first reason is... is... uh..  is because.. umm..  Oh, never mind.

A group of 40 year old buddies discussed where they should meet for dinner.

Finally, it was agreed upon that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the waitresses there were very young and very hot.

Ten years later at 50 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the food there was very good and the wine selection was excellent.

Ten years later at 60 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because they could eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the ocean.

Ten years later, at 70 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because the restaurant was wheel chair accessible and they even had an elevator.

Ten years later, at 80 years of age, the group once again discussed where they should meet for dinner. Finally, it was agreed that they should meet at the Ocean View restaurant because they had never been there before.

You're a hoot, Bill, you are a hoot! Thanks for this!

  From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 03/18/10 - "Dementia Quiz":

Sorry one and all.....I've just diagnosed myself.......I HAVE DEMENTIA!!!!!!!!!

DEMENTIA  QUIZ

FIRST QUESTION:

YOU ARE A PARTICIPANT IN A RACE. YOU OVERTAKE
THE SECOND PERSON. WHAT POSITION ARE YOU  IN?

~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~
ANSWER
:  IF YOU ANSWERED THAT YOU ARE FIRST,
THEN YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG! IF YOU OVERTAKE THE
SECOND PERSON AND YOU TAKE HIS PLACE, YOU ARE IN SECOND PLACE!
TRY TO DO BETTER NEXT TIME.
NOW ANSWER THE SECOND QUESTION,
BUT
DON'T TAKE AS MUCH TIME AS
YOU TOOK FOR THE FIRST QUESTION, OK?
SECOND QUESTION:
IF YOU OVERTAKE THE LAST PERSON, THEN YOU ARE....?
(SCROLL DOWN)
~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~

ANSWER
: IF YOU ANSWERED THAT YOU ARE SECOND TO LAST, THEN YOU ARE.....
  WRONG AGAIN. TELL ME SUNSHINE, HOW CAN YOU OVERTAKE THE LAST PERSON??

YOU'RE  NOT VERY GOOD AT THIS, ARE YOU?

THIRD QUESTION
:

VERY TRICKY ARITHMETIC! NOTE:
THIS MUST BE DONE IN YOUR HEAD ONLY.
DO NOT USE PAPER AND PENCIL OR A CALCULATOR.
TRY IT.

TAKE
1000 AND ADD 40 TO IT. NOW ADD ANOTHER 1000 NOW ADD 30.
ADD ANOTHER 1000. NOW ADD 20
.. NOW  ADD ANOTHER 1000.
NOW ADD 10. WHAT IS THE TOTAL?

SCROLL DOWN FOR THE CORRECT ANSWER.....

~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~
DID YOU GET
5000?
THE CORRECT ANSWER IS ACTUALLY 4100
...
IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT, CHECK IT WITH A CALCULATOR!
TODAY IS DEFINITELY NOT YOUR DAY, IS IT?
MAYBE YOU'LL GET THE LAST QUESTION RIGHT....  MAYBE...
FOURTH QUESTION
:
MARY'S FATHER HAS FIVE DAUGHTERS:
1. NANA, 2. NENE, 3. NINI,  4. NONO, AND ???
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE FIFTH DAUGHTER?
~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~

DID YOU ANSWER NUNU?
NO! OF COURSE IT ISN'T.
HER NAME IS
 MARY! READ THE QUESTION AGAIN!

OKAY, NOW THE BONUS ROUND,
I.E., A FINAL CHANCE TO
REDEEM YOURSELF:

A MUTE PERSON GOES INTO A SHOP AND WANTS TO BUY A TOOTHBRUSH.
BY IMITATING THE ACTION OF BRUSHING HIS TEETH HE
SUCCESSFULLY EXPRESSES HIMSELF TO THE SHOPKEEPER AND THE  PURCHASE IS DONE.
NEXT, A BLIND MAN COMES INTO THE SHOP WHO WANTS TO BUY A
PAIR OF SUNGLASSES; HOW DOES HE INDICATE WHAT HE WANTS?

~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~
IT'S REALLY VERY SIMPLE
HE OPENS HIS MOUTH AND ASKS FOR IT...
DOES YOUR EMPLOYER ACTUALLY PAY YOU TO THINK??
IF SO DO NOT LET THEM SEE YOUR ANSWERS FOR THIS TEST!
~~~~~~~~~~  ~~~~~~~~~~

PASS THIS ON TO FRUSTRATE THE
SMART PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE!
HAVE A NICE DAY, ONE AND ALL.

 Joyce Cahoon

   Thanks, Joyce!

      From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 03/18/10 - "Adorable":

     AWWW! Thanks, Shari! You know what a sucker I am for adorable little babies!

   Speaking of adorable.....

        From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 03/10/10 - "Oh my... I actually find this funny! (#1 in a Series of 9)":

What to do when really bored...

1. Kill a few flies

2. Put them in the sun to dry for one hour.

3. Once they are dry, pick a pencil and paper... Let your imagination flow.

Here are a few examples...

  So do I! Thanks, Gorgeous!

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes - 03/18/10:

Shopping

While I was working in the men's section of a department store, a woman asked me to help her choose a white dress shirt for her husband.

When I asked about his size, the woman looked stumped at first, then her face brightened. She held up her hands, forming a circle with her forefingers and thumbs.

"I don't know his size," she said, "but my hands fit perfectly around his neck."

On My Own

- Lyrics by Alain Boublil; Music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Les Misérables (1980)

(
Lea Salonga)

And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to turn, no one to go to.
Without a home, without a friend
without a face to say hello to
But now the night is near
And I can make-believe he's here

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him 'til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way, I close my eyes and he has found me

In the rain
The pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm lonely
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me, his world will go on turning
The world is full of happiness that I have never known

I love him
I love him
I love him...
But only on my own...
(sniffle)
