Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms

“You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-
confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.”

 - Douglas MacArthur
(26 Jan 1880 - 05 Apr 1964)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

All this week leading up to St. Patrick's Day, we'll be celebrating with Irish songs.

BONUS #1 - Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms - Sean McLarsen

BONUS #2 - Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms - A Capella Women's Choir

BONUS #3 - Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms - John McDermott

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Moore:

"The song Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms is often used in a famous gag in a number of Warner Brothers cartoons, usually involving a piano or Xylophone rigged to explode when a certain note is played. The hero, typically Bugs Bunny, tries to play the melody line of the song, but always misses the rigged note (C above middle C). The villain or rival, finally exasperated, pushes the hero aside and plays the song himself, striking the correct note and blowing himself up. In one instance, however, the protagonist plays the melody on a xylophone and, upon striking the rigged note, the antagonist explodes in an 'old gag, new twist.' "

SAD NEWS:

From Fred Mays ('60) of VA - 03/07/18, 9:56 AM AND 03/08/18, 8:12 PM - "Death of Don Carroll ('60) of VA":

Good Morning...

I just wanted to let you know that Donald Carroll passed away this morning at The Chesapeake, here in Newport News.

As you know, I work part-time at Peninsula Funeral Home. Don’s wife wanted Carol Brewer Johnson to call me and pass the word on to the class... As you may recall, he was Most Athletic in our Hall of Fame, along with Ruby Phillips. I understand she is not too well either.

I recall he played semi-pro football……..quite an athlete. When I get particulars, I will let you know. His wife is Joyce and she is a real dear……..really good for Don. We would see them from time to time whenever we visited The Chesapeake, as we have close friends who reside there. They are Martha Magann Keesee and her husband Tom. She graduated in 1957 and he in 1954. His father was Dean of Boys, Thomas O. Keesee, as you recall...

Take care, Fred Mays, ‘60

P.S. Hope you and yours are doing well.

Hey, thought I would let you know the arrangements for our classmate, Donald Carroll.

There is a visitation one hour before the funeral. This visitation is at 1100 a.m. on Monday, 03/12/18 at Calvary Baptist Church, downtown N.N., located on Huntington Avenue. The service is at 12:00 noon at the church. Burial is at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Take care, Fred Mays of Newport News, ‘60

Oh, Fred, I'm so sorry to learn of this, but thank you so much for letting me know! I'll start to work on it now.

From My Friend, Holly, of MO - 03/08/15 - "Rice Crispy Treats":

I made the best rice crispy treats:

1. Melt 1-1/2 sticks of butter in large pan.
2. Add 2 bags of marshmallows (mini or regular).
3. When the mixture is melted and well mixed, add 10 cups of cereal and mix together.
4. Add 1 bag of mini marshmallows, mix until evenly distributed, not melted down all of the way.
5. Press into a well greased 13x9 pan and let cool.

Makes 12 huge servings or 24 normal servings
These are so good. They are thick, chewy, and have lots of marshmallowy goodness.

   YUMMY! Thank you, Holly!

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 03/09/18:

Paddy was coming back from his holiday in America. As he came through Customs, he had two sacks over his shoulders. The Customs officer asked him he had in the sacks. Paddy replied mobile phones.

The customs officer didn't believe him, and asked to be shown. Paddy opened each sack, and sure enough each contained quite a few phones.

"What are you going to do with all these phones?" asked the officer.

"Oh, they are not for me. My friend, who is a musical director, knew I was going over to America. He asked me to bring him back a 'couple of saxophones.'"

Believe Me If All Those Enduring Young Charms

Words by
Thomas Moore
(28 May 1779 - 25 Feb 1852)
Melody: Traditional

Believe me, if all those endearing young charms
Which I gaze on so fondly today
Were to change by tomorrow and fleet in my arms
Like fairy gifts fading away.
Thou wouldst still be adored as this moment thou art
Let thy loveliness fade as it will
And around the dear ruin each wish of my heart
Would entwine itself verdantly still.

It is not while beauty and youth are thine own
And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear
That the fervor and faith of a soul can be known
To which time will but make thee more dear.
No, the heart that has truly loved never forgets
But as truly loves on to the close
As
the sunflower turns to her God when he sets
The same look which she turned when she rose.
