Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms

“You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-
confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.”

(26 Jan 1880 - 05 Apr 1964)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Moore:

"The song Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms is often used in a famous gag in a number of Warner Brothers cartoons, usually involving a piano or Xylophone rigged to explode when a certain note is played. The hero, typically Bugs Bunny, tries to play the melody line of the song, but always misses the rigged note (C above middle C). The villain or rival, finally exasperated, pushes the hero aside and plays the song himself, striking the correct note and blowing himself up. In one instance, however, the protagonist plays the melody on a xylophone and, upon striking the rigged note, the antagonist explodes in an 'old gag, new twist.' "

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 03/09/17 - "Crazy":

Hi, Carol:

Thank you for sending out your Email for the TYPHOON Nation.

Lest we forget, the song “Crazy” was a very popular country song sung by Patsy Kline, a young lady from Winchester, Virginia. This song was written by Willie Nelson. I know that you know all this history, and maybe I need to come into the 21st Century. Just like the song the old fashion way!

It has been so nice to hear from so many Marines from the 97th Rifle Company, USMCR, Newport News, VA with the passing of
WD Dangler, NNHS Class of 1957.
WD went to Parris Island with five other Marines Recruits from Newport News and Hampton. Even identified a Marine friend in Boston who was in that Recruit Platoon.

The Corps is small, but fierce, and no doubt ISIL will find that out now that the Secretary of the Defense sent a Marine Artillery Battalion to Syria to support the U.S. Army Rangers who will go face to face with the Barbarians in Syria. Semper Fidelis.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan

Thanks so much, Adonis! I added your remarks to W.D.'s Memorial Newsletter.

What's really CRAZY is that Someone in Charge allowed two completely different songs to share the same title. I thought that was "posta" be against the law, but I do really like both of them. I use both songs every year, and you can see and hear the haunting original ballad - complete with the same graphics - here:

From My Friend, Holly, of MO - 03/08/15 - "Rice Crispy Treats":

I made the best rice crispy treats:

1. Melt 1-1/2 sticks of butter in large pan.
2. Add 2 bags of marshmallows (mini or regular).
3. When the mixture is melted and well mixed, add 10 cups of cereal and mix together.
4. Add 1 bag of mini marshmallows, mix until evenly distributed, not melted down all of the way.
5. Press into a well greased 13x9 pan and let cool.

Makes 12 huge servings or 24 normal servings
These are so good. They are thick, chewy, and have lots of marshmallowy goodness.

   YUMMY! Thank you, Holly!

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 03/09/17:

Two gas company servicemen, a senior training supervisor and a young trainee, were out checking meters in a suburban neighborhood. They parked their truck at the end of the alley and worked their way to the other end.

At the last house a woman looking out her kitchen window watched the two men as they checked her gas meter. Finishing the meter check, the senior supervisor challenged his younger coworker to a foot race down the alley back to the truck to prove that an older guy could outrun a younger one.

As they came running up to the truck, they realized the lady from that last house was huffing and puffing right behind them. They stopped and asked her what was wrong.

Gasping for breath, she replied, "When I see two gas men running as hard as you two were, I figured I'd better run too!"

Believe Me If All Those Enduring Young Charms

Words by Thomas Moore
(28 May 1779 - 25 Feb 1852)
Melody: Traditional

Believe me, if all those endearing young charms
Which I gaze on so fondly today
Were to change by tomorrow and fleet in my arms
Like fairy gifts fading away.
Thou wouldst still be adored as this moment thou art
Let thy loveliness fade as it will
And around the dear ruin each wish of my heart
Would entwine itself verdantly still.

It is not while beauty and youth are thine own
And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear
That the fervor and faith of a soul can be known
To which time will but make thee more dear.
No, the heart that has truly loved never forgets
But as truly loves on to the close
As
the sunflower turns to her God when he sets
The same look which she turned when she rose.
