|"Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by
Alex North and lyrics by
Zaret. It has become one of the most recorded songs of the 20th
century, by some estimates having spawned over 500 versions in hundreds
of different languages.
In 1955, Alex North used the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained, hence the name. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. Les Baxter (Capitol Records catalog number 3055), released an instrumental version which reached #2. Then song recordings were released by Al Hibbler (Decca Records #29441) reaching #3 on the Billboard charts, Jimmy Young which hit #1 in the United Kingdom, and Roy Hamilton (Epic Records no. 9102) reaching #1 on the R&B Best Sellers list and #6 on the pop chart. Hundreds of other recordings followed.
In 1955, Alex North and lyricist Hy Zaret were contracted to write a song as a theme for the obscure prison film Unchained, and their song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody". The song does not actually include the word "unchained", and songwriter Zaret chose instead to focus his lyrics on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". The 1955 film centers around a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run, or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family.

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 03/01/15:
|A husband went to the
police station to file a "missing person" report for his missing wife.
The following conversation took place.
Husband. I lost my wife, she went shopping and hasn't come back yet.
Policeman. What is her height?
Husband. I never checked.
Policeman. Slim or fat?
Husband. Not slim, not fat.
Policeman. Colour of eyes?
Husband. Never noticed.
Policeman. Colour of hair?
Husband. Changes according to season.
Policeman. What was she wearing?
Husband. Not sure whether it was a dress or a suit.
Policeman. Was she driving?
Policeman. Colour of the car?
Husband. Black Audi A8 with supercharged 3.0 litre V6 engine generating 333 horse power teamed with an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. And it has full LED headlights, which use light emitting diodes for all light functions and has a very thin scratch on the front left door , and then the husband started crying.
Policeman. Don't worry sir, we will find your car.

Oh, my love, my darling,
I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time,
Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much.
Are you still mine?
I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me.
Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Lonely rivers sigh, 'Wait for me, wait for me'
'I'll be coming home, wait for me!'
Are you still mine?
I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me
