“We cannot foresee what the Lord has in mind for us. Our only course of action is to be prepared and worthy for whatever he requires. We must govern our actions every day with our future in mind.”

    Thanks so much, Susan!

From Joan Lauterbach Krause ('60) of VA - 03/01/18:

   Thank you, Joan!

From Mayim Bialik (North Hollywood High School, CA - '93) of CA - 02/28/18:

Happy Purim! I went as a carpenter.

It's time to celebrate Purim! Purim is kind of like Jewish Halloween but we’re all supposed to get kind of drunk as we celebrate how a Persian Queen manifested Jewish salvation...

My Hamantaschen Recipe

For those of you celebrating Purim, please drink responsibly and don't drive under the influence! Sending good wishes to you all for a beautiful Purim! For this holiday, many of us will be donating to food charities since today was a fasting day and it's a way to honor our tradition's emphasis on spreading love. Consider finding a food bank in your area maybe. In LA, I like MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, but there are many to choose from!

ABSOLUTELY! Thank you, Mayim! Happy Purim!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 02/28/18:

Hi, Carol,

I learned from Slade Dunn (NNHS '56) that he was drafted in the United States Army two days after completing his studies at Randolph-Macon. Fort Jackson for training, and then to Fort Benning, GA where he served in Armor. Imagine a 6'5" Soldier climbing into a "Tank"! They were forming a 2nd Armor Division at the time during the Vietnam War. So, you can add the USA seal to his name now!!

DOUBLE WOWZERS! Thank you, Major Madagan - and what are the chances that you both served in Armor??

I think the only place (other than the several Football, Basketball, and Baseball pages) that Slade, the Most Athletic Boy in the Class of 1956, appears in our pages was on the Memorial Newsletter for his brother-in-law, Donald Long ('52), so I performed one of my revisionist history acts there.

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 02/28/18:

    Thank you, Linda May!

From My Cousin, Jean Atkinson Mallory (Warsaw HS / Rappahannock HS / John Marshall HS - '65) of VA - 02/26/18:

    EXACTAMUNDO! Thank you, Jean!

“We have that Indian scene. We can get the Indians from the reservoir.”

- Samuel Goldwyn, film producer
(17 Aug  1882 - 31 Jan

From Wayne Agee ('58) of FL - 02/12/18 - "ONE WORD ESSAYS ... Beautiful!" (#11 in a Series of 26):

  May your troubles be less...

May your blessings be more...

May nothing but happiness come through your door.

   Thank you, Wayne!

Sara Rivka's Crocheted Doggy Nose Warmer - Perfect for Purim! - "Ever heard of crocheted nose warmers? I hadn't either until I received an email request to make one, and while i don't generally do custom crochet orders, this one was a request by a newly-wed for a gift for his wife whose nose tends to get cold, so sweet I just couldn't resist!"

BONUS CROCHET AFGHAN PATTERNS (Sorry; not theme-related):

Tammy Hildebrand's Ice Crystal Throw - "It may be snowing outside, but you’ll have this wonderful crocheted throw to keep you warm! There are five strips with ten snowflakes in each strip, all in beautiful crystal shades that look like the sun is shining on the snow."

Mary Jane Protus' One Skein Throw

TikkunKnits: Patterns for Peacebuilders - "As a committed tikkunknitter, I live by the creed “justice, justice you shall pursue” …. It seems unquestionable that to pursue justice globally, we must support the peacebuilders in our midst. All of my Judaica patterns are created in this spirit of tikkun olam, as are the inter-faith or inter-cultural projects found here. With this in mind, I have made these knitting and crochet patterns available for a nominal amount (typically $5-10 per pattern); which will be donated to one of the peace-building organizations featured on the PeaceBuilders page. "

Basic Kreplach - "Kreplach are small squares of rolled pasta dough filled with ground beef or chicken and folded into triangles. They can be boiled and served in soup or fried and served as a side dish. They are traditionally served on Purim, at the pre Yom Kippur meal1 and on Hoshanah Rabbah, the seventh day of Sukkot."

Fancy Kreplach

Amy Graham's Chocolate Challah - "For all of you looking to do something a little different with your challah! This recipe is courtesy of my brother, accomplished baker and chocoholic. ..."

Karen Selwvn's Snowpea - Citrus Salad with Poppyseed Dressing - "I have a real fondness for citrus salads, and I discovered a new one during my habitual net surfing. While this recipe certainly isn't traditional Jewish cuisine, I think it has enough symbolism to be served at one of two holidays: Tu B'Shevat or Purim. The abundance of fruits and nuts qualifies it for Tu B'Shevat and the abundance of poppyseed in the dressing it qualifies for Purim."

From - 02/28/18:

"My ancestry goes back all the way to Alexander the Great," said Christine. She then turned to Miriam and asked, "How far back does your family go?"

"I don't know," replied Miriam, "all of our records were lost in the flood."

Blessed is Mordechai the Judean

Cursed is Zeresh, the wife of my tormentor

Blessed is Esther, who has shielded me
