Mary Louise Akers Hudson
(d. 19 Feb 2011)

Newport News High School Class of @ 1938

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   The sad news continues to arrive.  Mary Akers Hudson, Class of @ 1938, mother of the late
    Doc Hudson (Warwick HS - Class of 1960) and mother-in-law of    Cathy Slusser Hudson ('64) of VA, passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2011 in Newport News at the age of 90.

  From Catherine Slusser Hudson ('64) of VA - 02/20/11, 10:43 PM, 02/21/11 and 03/01/11, 7:19 PM - "Passing of Mary L. Hudson":

Hi Carol :  I have some sad news.

It is with a heavy heart that I advise all my family and friends of the death of Mary L. Hudson.

On 2-19-2011, she passed from this life to be with her beloved husband, David W. Hudson, and son     L. M. "Doc" Hudson (Warwick HS - '60) (05 Jan 1942 - 24 Apr 2010), and daughter Marsha L. Hudson-Rosenbaum.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory a son, Mark Hudson and his wife Debbie, and granddaughter April. She also leaves her other 5 grandchildren and their families: granddaughter Monica Stefanowicz and her husband Mike; great-grandsons Kyle and David; grandson Scott Hudson; grandson Todd Hudson and his wife Dradi; and great-granddaughter Lauren Marie and great-grandson Andrew; granddaughter Amy Rieger and her husband Lance; great-grandsons Alex and Hunter; and great-granddaughter Hailey; and grandson Shawn Rosenbaum and his wife Amanda; and great-granddaughter Athena.

It was my pleasure to have loved and been her daughter-in-law for 46 years; may she now Rest In Peace. She will always be remembered and loved by us all and her memories will last us a lifetime.

Mary was a graduate of NNHS and so was her husband, David W. Hudson. Mary was 90 years old at the time of her death. She graduated from Riverside School of Nursing at the original Riverside Hospital down next to the Shipyard. She also worked for Dr. A.B.H. Mirmelstein and Dr. Irving Berlin and she worked at Tidewater Regional Police Academy when it was in Hampton. After retirement she attended and graduated from the Newport News Senior Citizen Police Academy.

I omitted Mary Hudson's maiden name. She was born in PA and was adopted.  Her legal name was Mary Louise Akers. Her adopted mother remarried Robert E. Jones but I think Mary still went by Akers. I believe she graduated Class of 1938 but not really sure.  I was really tired when I sent you the Death Notice.

I hope this is the last time I will be sending you a Death Notice for my family for a while. As you know I lost my husband in April and my dad in October and my mother-in-law on Saturday.

When I met my husband, Mary was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church in Hampton, Virginia.

In addition to the other list of achievements in her life, she was also the Nurse for the Young Americans Drum and Bugle Corps, of which she was very proud, and she attended all their reunions and stayed in touch with several of the members.

There will be a Celebration of her Life on Friday, March 25th at Chestnut Memorial Methodist Church on Saunders Road in Newport News, Va. from 6 pm to 9 pm.

My brother-in-law and his wife have made all the arrangements, and my daughter arranged the obituary for the newspaper, so I didn't have all the details when I notified you of her death.

Catherine Hudson

   Oh, Cathy, I'm so very sorry to hear this! This year has been an unbelievably brutal one for you; you and your family have my deepest sympathies in your time of loss.

Mark,
It has been years since I have seen or heard from you. I worked with you at Ft. Eustis Finance and wondered how you and Debbie were doing all of these years.
I send you and your family my heartfelt condolences at the loss of your mother. May you find comfort in the fond memories of Mrs. Mary.
Be encouraged and blessed.

My Faith Looks Up to Thee

Words by Ray Palmer, 1830

Music by
Lowell Mason (08 Jan 1792 - 11 Aug 1872), 1832

My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Savior divine!
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
O let me from this day
Be wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire!
As Thou hast died for me,
O may my love to Thee,
Pure warm, and changeless be,
A living fire!

While life's dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my Guide;
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow's tears away,
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

When ends life's transient dream,
When death's cold sullen stream
Over me roll;
Blest Savior, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove;
O bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul!
