Fever

“It is like when one has a fever. It can cool off,
or it can flip upwards so high you die."

- James Lovelock
(b. 26 July 1919)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

In case it hasn't been patently obvious by now, I have spent the entire month of February being sick or sicker.  Just when I thought I was finally getting better, Tuesday my fever hit at least 101.0.  As one of my little darlings used to say, this is a "stupid stupidhead" germ which reinvents itself daily.  As I cannot think at all during such times, you've heard precious little from me.  But I did think it was time at last to replay this theme, first used seventeen months ago today (I think that math is correct.  Did I mention I'm not thinking straight?!?):

MISSED BIRTHDAYS:

As I've rarely even approached my computer during the last week or so (what am I saying??  I've rarely even left the sofa, except perhaps to crawl back into bed), look at all I missed!  I am so sorry!

From Jay Styles ('68) of VA - 03/01/07:

Dearest Carol,

OK Girl, officially worried!  A problem shared is a problem solved.  Hopefully.  And you don't want to know about my night, last night and early this morning.  Not about me, I'm doing just fine.  Another very bad accident.  Anyway, just wondering, as the rest of Typhoon Nation is I'm sure.

Take Care
Jay Styles, '68

Jay Honey, you are such a Sweetie Pie!  There's nothing exciting going on, I assure you.  I've just been quite ill - fever, chills, sniffles, congestion, coughing, hacking, difficulty breathing, weakness, dizziness, body aches, mental confusion - what am I missing?  Oh, yeah, I could have lost weight, but that would have been out of the question....  And I certainly wouldn't want to share any of that misery with any of y'all!   I'm sorry for my silence.  I did wander in a couple of times, and couldn't remember how to do anything constructive.  When I noticed I was reeling, I retreated back to my sofa.

You were on my mind last night (probably precipitated by my watching as many episodes of all forms of Law and Order, CSI, and NCIS as I could find all month).  There was some gory thing or other which made me think of you, and how I do not envy you your job, bless your heart.

Take care of yourself, Sweetie - and thanks again for your concern!

From Al Simms ('60) of VA - 02/24/07 - "Huntington Court Apartments":

Carol,

And one more for your Our Old Apartments page.

Back then (1946) it was the Huntington Court Apartments; now (2007) it is Huntington On The James. We lived there for about 1 year when we first came to Newport News from out in the country near Littleton, NC.  After that Calvary Baptist Church bought the parsonage at 314-64th Street and we moved there.  From the photos the apartments have been upgraded significantly since then and also have a very upgraded price.  It was a nice community then and looks as if it still is.  Website in case you are interested is Huntington On The James

The then pictures are from 1946 and the now from their website today:

Thanks, Al!  In a rare moment of lucidity - before I became really, really, REALLY sick, I made this page, complete with Al's 13 images:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/apartments.html

     http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/huntington-court-apts.html - brand new page

From Al Simms ('60) of VA - 02/25/07 - "Re: Huntington Court Apartments":

Carol,

I am sorry that you are sick again.  I had guessed as much since you have been quieter than usual of late.  Sure hope it does not last long and you make a speedy and quick recovery.

That would be nice, Al, thanks! It's become one of my favorite fantasies....

The new page looks great!

Although it looks as if it is a nice area and north end does too beyond 55th Street or so, my daughter Martha, who recently moved away from Newport News is of the opinion that it is not a nice area anymore.  She does admit that though that since she lived much further out, that there might be a "good pocket" of residential area there.  And of course neither you or I live there and so who knows.  I can tell you one thing though; Stuart Gardens used to be a very nice area back in the 50s but when I rode thru there a couple of years ago, I told my wife to make sure her door was locked that we were going to exit that neighborhood as quickly as possible!  Things do change over the years.  Same but not the same........

Stay warm and get well soon.

   So true.  Thanks again, Al!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 02/25/07 - "Re: Huntington Court Apartments":

Hi, Carol:

Sorry to hear you and your dear daughter are ill, and running a fever.

Thanks for sharing the new page with me from the materials furnished by    Al Simms ('60 - of VA). That is a nice addition to the website. I used to walk by these apartments on Wednesday Evenings to and from weekly drills at the 97th Rifle Company, USMCR when I was a TYPHOON. They were always so well kept and maintained.

When you send this out in your newsletter, maybe your subscribers will be able to identify the children in these photos.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

That's a great idea, Joe!  If anyone is able to identify the "4 sidewalk superintendents" plus the little girl shown in the 1946 images with Al, please let us know!

   Thanks, Adonis!

From Jean Lankes (Hampton HS - '72) of VA - 02/24/07 - "Song mystery":

Hi Carol!

Hope things are looking up for you!

This is going to sound nutty as two fruitcakes, but my sister & I seem to be the only two people on earth who remember a song that could have been titled "Hey-hey-hey-hey." WGH played it briefly in the mid-sixties. It sounds like (but is probably not) the Dave Clark 5. Some of the lyrics go, "Tell me..... please..... come on..... love me.... hey-hey-hey-hey..... I know I'm alright." It had a lively 2/4 sock-time beat. We think it was probably a local band. I've asked everyone I know, and not even    Tom "Corky" Norris (Hampton HS - '73 - of VA) remembers (if you can imagine that!) so I realize how far-out this request must be!!!!

By the way, this song is NOT the flip side of "Good Golly Miss Molly," by Little Richard, as discussed in the movie Diner.

Best,
Jean Lankes
HHS '72

It doesn't sound fruity to me, Jean. I've had a song running relentlessly through my head for three-and-a-half years now, with no identification  in sight.  I call people and sing it them - nada.  Let's see if we have more luck with yours.  I asked a couple of our experts:

From Dale Parsons ('69) of HI - 02/24/07 - "RE: Song mystery":

Aloha All!

This is tough!  The only song I know of that comes close to this is "I Know (I'm Alright)" by Bo Diddley, but it was never a hit.  It may have been covered by British band, but I don't know if that happened.

I'll continue to think about it.

Was it a group?  Male?  Female?

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 02/25.07 - "Re: Song mystery":

I have located one song containing all the lyric fragments which Jean provided. Unfortunately, I cannot locate an audio file of the song.

Even without the file, it would be a stretch for a  Neil Young song to have a "2/4 sock tome beat", and this song's lyrics do not appear to be very upbeat.

The mystery continues ......

Lyrics of Neil Young - Don't Pity Me Babe :

Young Pegi just died today
Young Pegi just died today
And I guess
nobody even knows the case
But the way the story goes
She just ran out of clothes
No will this world
Just for the peg down
Last words, can't talk
And then she wrote.

Some people can't stand no rain
Some people can't stand no rain
When it's cloudy outside
You can't see the sun
But on a bright and sunny day
The people all go away
Except one
Oh no don't pity me babe
I know I'm alright
O yeah, I'm alright.

Don't see no tears around me
Don't see no tears around me
I don't take too much stock
In the things people say
I'm not saying that they're wrong
They've just
been standing around too long
Gone bad,
Oh no, don't pity me babe
I know I'm alright
O yeah, I'm alright.

Can't ride my broom no more
Can't ride my broom no more
'Cause the landlady's taken
To sweeping the floor
I guess I'll go back to my place
And occupy a little space
John Doe,
Oh no, don't pity me babe
I know I'm alright
O yeah, I'm alright.

The streets are crammed, can't walk
Might find somebody and talk
I can't find nobody who
Say boo, guess who
'Cause that street
is paved with aires
And everybody is putting on theirs
Can't breathe
Oh no, don't pity me babe
I know I'm alright
O yeah, I'm alright.

He's standing outside my door
He's standing outside my door
But he won't ring the bell
And he's just to scared to knock
And he's puzzled
And he's young
And he's doing what's
already been done
One more
Oh no, don't pity me babe
I know I'm alright
O yeah, I'm alright.

Oh no, don't pity me babe
I know I'm alright.

From Jean Lankes (Hampton HS - '72) of VA - 02/25/07 - "Song mystery":

I've had some interesting email re: the mystery song, but no luck yet. The song I have in mind has "Hey-hey-hey-hey" (E, F, F#, G) repeated throughout.
- Jean

Sorry, Jean.  Thank you, Gentlemen, for your heroic efforts.

   "Anyone?  Anyone?"

   And speaking of Hawaii:

From Melody Clendenin DeBerry (Warwick HS - '66) of VA - 02/28/07 - "Aloha!":

Jimmy (DeBerry - '64 - of VA) and I are leaving for Hawaii on Friday Mar 2 and will be gone until Mar 12.  Save your e-mails until then, and we'll send you some pictures back!

Aloha!

   WOWZERONI-RINI!!!  Have a great trip, y'all!

From Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 02/25/07:

"When I returned home, I was delighted to see that one of my favorite tech reppies and general morale boosters (who asked to remain anonymous) had advised me to do the very same thing - so I did! (Thanks, Sweetie! )"

Actually, I wasn't looking to remain anonymous -- just didn't think a technical comment was worthy of inclusion in the newsletter. (You're welcome, love!!)

Ron

Oh.  OH!  WILDEST GIGGLES!!!  I tolja my brain wasn't functioning very well!  Thanks again, Sweetie!

  From Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 02/25/07 and 03/01/07 - " Coach Nuttycombe":

Hi Carol -- I knew about this when it happened, but like a doofus forgot to email the news to you for inclusion in the newsletter. So here it is, better late than never!

Coach Nuttycombe received a well deserved honor in November 2005  when he was inducted into the National Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame!! He joined a glittering list of many coaches of national, olympic, and international reknown.

He was nominated by Ron Garner, a 1975 (?) Ferguson HS graduate, who himself coached track & field at the college level for many years. Garner was at the ceremony, and said that Coach Nuttycombe was quite humbled and emotional. One of his sons, Eddie, (who may be an NNHS grad ??, but I think he was a Menchville grad) was the presenter.

I have enclosed 4 photos of the ceremony, and you may see a brief bio on the following link on the Association's website:

http://ustfccca.cstv.com/genrel/nuttycombe_charles00.html

There is a chance there may be a video of the ceremony. I'll do some checking and see if there is, so you can put it on your NNHS website also.

Ron

I checked, but unfortunately, there's no known video of Coach Nuttycombe's Hall of Fame induction.

One further note: his is indeed a singular honor -- he is the only high school coach in the Hall.

-- Ron

WOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI!!! Thanks, Ronnie! The next time my brain clears sufficiently to do something beyond operating on automatic pilot, I'll update his page with your note and the four images:

From Ann Bryant ('64) of VA - 02/25/07 - "Change in email address":

Hi Carol,

I would appreciate it very much if you could change my email address to ___________
I so enjoy receiving the newsletter and I thank you for all you do.

Thanks so much,
Ann Bryant

Thank you, Ann! And thanks for the heads-up about your senior portrait.  To help me remember, I placed an asterisk by your name on the so-called "Alumni" page:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/alumni-list.html

I know there are more of y'all who have told me that as well, but to refresh my so-called memory, please tell me again, and I'll give you an asterisk of your own.  Thanks!

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 02/26/07 - "Grandma's Boyfriend":

A 5-year-old boy went to visit his grandmother one day. Playing with his toys in her bedroom while grandma was dusting, he looked up and said, "Grandma, how come you don't have a boyfriend now that Grandpa went to heaven?"

Grandma replied, "Honey, my TV is my boyfriend. I can sit in my bedroom and watch it all day long. The religious programs make me feel good and the comedies make me laugh. I'm happy with my TV as my boyfriend."

Grandma turned on the TV, and the reception was terrible. She started adjusting the knobs, trying to get the picture in focus. Frustrated, she started hitting the backside of the TV hoping to fix the problem.

The little boy heard the doorbell ring, so he hurried to open the door and there stood Grandma's minister.

The minister said, "Hello, son, is your Grandma home?"
The little boy replied, "Yeah, she's in the bedroom bangin' her boyfriend."

The minister fainted.

Now, that right there is funny.....I don't care who you are!!!

Okay, Lady, you got me with that one! Thanks - I think!!!

Fever

(Peggy Lee)

Never know how much I love you
Never know how much I care
When you put your arms around me
I get a fever that's so hard to bear

You give me fever, when you kiss me
Fever when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night

Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
My eyes light up when you call my name
'Cause I know you're gonna treat me right

Everybody's got the fever
That is something you should know
Fever isn't such a new scene
Fever started long ago
