Newport News High School Class of 1958

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   I am shocked and saddened to bring you yet another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter this Monday.        Donnie Tugwell, Class of 1958, brother of Dorothy Tugwell Hill of VA and of the late Mitchell Tugwell, passed away at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach on Friday, February 21, 2014 at the age of 74.

     Perhaps you remember this image from the 1958 Band Page - or even better, perhaps you remember as I do being in attendance at one of those concerts. They were truly unforgettable.
1958 Anchor, p. 86
"As we glance into C period band class, we find the trumpet section busily practicing for the Senior Band's coming concerts."
LEFT TO RIGHT: Donnie Tugwell ('58); Julius Benton ('58);
Dan Rouse ('59); Jimmy Grubbs ('58); Wayne Johnson ('60); Albert Simms ('60); Chuck Anspach ('60); and Norman Dick ('60)

Dorothy and family,
My wife Dianne and I met Donnie in 1996 when I switched from Gloucester lodge to Warwick. Donnie was always very respectful to us and we helped him out whenever we could, and we missed him when he moved to Virginia Beach. His passing leaves our ranks emptier but memories richer. May light perpetual shine upon him.

Sorry to hear of Donnie's passing. Seeing his picture reminds me of old times we had together at the Village Restaurant.

Nearer, My God, to Thee

Words by Sarah Flower Adams (22 Feb 1805 - 14 Aug 1848), based loosely on Genesis 28:1119,[1], 1841
Music (Bethany) by
Lowell Mason (08 Jan 1792 11 Aug 1872), 1856

Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
yet in my dreams I'd be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given;
angels to beckon me
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
so by my woes to be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!

Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
