I'm Always Chasing Rainbows

"He felt like a man who, chasing rainbows, has had one of them suddenly turn and bite him in the leg."

- P.G. Wodehouse (15 Oct 1881 - 14 Feb 1975),
Eggs, Beans and Crumpets
Chapter 5  - "Anselm Gets His Chance"

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

My mama, the late Maxine Frix Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25) (19 May 1908 - 15 Feb 1999), used to sing this song to my sister,  the Best Dressed Girl in the Class of 1959, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky of NC, and me as a lullaby. Maybe she'll sing it to me again tonight, because today is 02/22/20.

"I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" is a popular Vaudeville song. The music is credited to Harry Carroll, but the melody is adapted from Fantaisie-Impromptu by Frédéric Chopin. The lyrics were written by Joseph McCarthy, and the song was published in 1917. It was introduced in the Broadway show Oh, Look! which opened in March 1918.[1] The song was sung in the show by the Dolly Sisters.[1] Judy Garland sang it in the 1941 film Ziegfeld Girl. It was subsequently sung by Jack Oakie in the 1944 film The Merry Monahans and was again featured in the 1945 film The Dolly Sisters (1945 in film), where it was sung by John Payne.[1] It was also included for part of the run (and in the cast album) of the 1973 revival of Irene.

The song is a true popular standard, recorded by many artists over the years.

From - 02/21/19:

Mr. Peterson, a tourist from Toronto, arrived in Barbados. In an airport taxi cab, Peterson asked the driver, "Say, is this really a healthful place?"

"It sure is," the cabby replied. "When I arrived here I couldn't say one word. I had hardly any hair on my head. I didn't have the strength to walk across a room, and I had to be lifted out of bed."

"That's wonderful!" said the tourist, "How long have you been here?"

"I was born here."

I'm Always Chasing Rainbows

Lyrics by Joseph McCarthy (27 Sept 1885 – 18 Dec 1943)

Music by Harry Carroll (28 Nov 1892 – 26 Dec 1962), 1917

Adapted from
Fantaisie-Impromptu in C Sharp Minor by Frédéric Chopin (01 Mar 1810 – 17 Oct 1849)

At the end of the rainbow there's happiness,
And to find it often I've tried,
But my life is a race, just a wild goose chase,
And my dreams have all been denied.
Why have I always been a failure?
What can the reason be?
I wonder if the world's to blame,
I wonder if it could be me.

I'm always chasing rainbows,
Watching clouds drifting by,
My schemes are just like all my dreams,
Ending in the sky.
Some fellows look and find the sunshine,
I always look and find the rain.
Some fellows make a winning sometime,
But I never even make a gain, believe me,
I'm always chasing rainbows,
Waiting to find a little bluebird in vain.
