02/21/12 - NNHS Newsletter - Mardi Gras

“It has been said that a Scotchman has not seen the world until he has seen Edinburgh;
and I think that I may say that an American has not seen the United States
until he as seen Mardi-Gras in New Orleans."

- Mark Twain, Letter to Pamela Moffett, March 1859
(30 Nov 1835 - 21 Apr 1910)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Holiday Newsletter is being revisited from 02/24/09, wherein I said:

When I was a little girl, I always wanted to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.  My mama               the late Maxine Frix Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25), quietly said she didn't think I'd really enjoy it as much as I thought I might.  I couldn't understand why on earth she'd think such a thing.  I mean, c'mon, an entire city having what seemed to me to be the equivalent of a giant costume party - complete with parades?!?  I was pretty sure she must be mistaken, but it would have been quite rude and unseemly of me to argue with (i.e. "backtalk") my mama, so of course I didn't.

Knowing what I do now, I'm certain that she was correct; it just isn't quite what I imagined, just not my style, n'est pas?  It's amazing how much our mothers knew all along, isn't it?

So it wasn't the Real Me after all, but, hey, we're here to celebrate together, so here ya go!

From Lloyd Nelson ('61) of VA - 02/13/12 - "RE: Down in the River to Pray":

I really liked that movie and would like to see it again because I think I missed some of the deeper parts.

Your e-mail reminded of some photos I took in Aug. 2008 on our way to Branson, Missouri with our friends, Sonny and Tricia.  We had stopped at a rest stop on the interstate and while I waited for the rest of them to return to the car I saw some activity through the trees at a little park off the highway with a small stream running by.  The park and stream were below the parking area of the rest stop and had it's own access road with no access from the interstate.

I thought is was interesting so I got my camera and walked over to the fence and took these photos.  I zoomed in for two and one to show the distance.  It looked like all young white children with their parents and a black minister.  So they were going "Down in the River to Pray".

You can see the photos here:

Lloyd

Thank you so much, Lloyd! What a fascinating account! Well, okay, perhaps it is even more so to me because I do so adore that movie!

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 02/20/12 - "Great OLD photos":

I thought you would like to see these old photographs, wow, glad someone kept them and passed them on:

http://www.topdesignmag.com/40-stunning-old-photos/

WOWZERS! Thanks, Ruthie - what treasures! Ya gotta love the detail that appears in those old images. If you stare at them long enough they almost seem to come to life!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC - 02/20/12 - "This is sooo cute!":

Every once in a while we have to have our cute animal fix.

AWWW! He's so cute - whatever he is! Thanks, Dools!

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 02/20/12 - "To all that want to hear about underground tunnels in the prison., and the fourth tunnel that was just found.":

I did not know it this was ever sent.  Had to get a new computer as the old one was not sending or receiving messages most of the time.

Carol,
This was sent to me by an older friend of mine.  I thought of your posts about WW II and that you might like to see it.  I found it Amazing! A nation that thinks all is doom could learn a few things from this, and perhaps get an old-fashioned stiff upper lip for dealing with our problems.

Thanks, Ruthie! Actually, between your computer woes and Adventures with New Grandbaby, I never did receive it from you, but        my husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of NC) sent it to me on 12/29/11, and it appears on our New Year's Eve Special Holiday Edition:

http://nnhs65.com/12-31-11-NNHS-Happy-New-Years-Eve.html

So I'll just repost the link and tell you what I told him then:

WOWZERONI-RINI! That's amazing! Thanks so much for this fascinating account!

RECIPE BONUS:

http://www.mrfood.com/Stew-Recipes/Hunters-Stew-4262/ml/1 - Hunter's Stew - "This stew got its name because it was the food of choice taken by Polish hunters on hunting trips. For more authentic taste, substitute Polish sausage for the smoked sausage. Pair this stew with rye or pumpernickel bread and full-bodied beer for a one-dish meal that's sure to please the heartiest eater."

WEBMISTRESS' NOTE: Akshully (English major, ya know), this offering doesn't interest me at all.  I don't drink beer, I can't abide sauerkraut, and the thought of big ol' chunks of tomatoes floating around in my stew doesn't thrill me either.  And where's the beef??  I'm just saying.....

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 02/06/12 - "Recent Solar Storms Trigger Beautiful Auroras (#2 in a Series of 12)":

OOOH! Thanks, Shari!

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 02/20/12:

Larry was startled to see the nonchalant way Jason was taking the fact that his girlfriend was seen with another man.

“You said you loved her and yet you saw her with another man and you didn’t knock the guy down?”

“I’m waiting.”

“Waiting for what?” asked Larry.

“Waiting to catch her with a smaller feller.”

Jambalaya (On the Bayou)

Written and recorded by Hank Williams
(17 Sept 1923 - 01 Jan 1953)

Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh my oh
Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou
My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have good fun on the bayou

CHORUS:

Jambalaya, a-crawfish pie and-a fillet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma chez amio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.

Instrumental Verse (Country Fiddle solo)

Thibodeaux, Fontainbleau, the place is buzzin'
Kinfolk come to see Yvonne by the dozen
Dress in style, go hog wild, me oh my oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.

REPEAT CHORUS

Instrumental Verse (Country Fiddle solo)

FINAL CHORUS:
Jambalaya, a-crawfish pie and-a fillet gumbo
'Cause tonight I'm gonna see my ma chez amio
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.
Son of a gun, we'll have big fun on the bayou.
