Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   

   There is more sad news this Saturday morning. Jayne Zilber, Class of June '51, passed away in Newport News on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the age of 84.

   Jayne's sister, Dorene Zilber Nachman Sarfan (February 1946), and brother-in-law, Mayer Sarfan (June 1945), both passed away within the last four months.

   May their memories be for a blessing always.

  NEWPORT NEWS - Jayne Lee Zilber, 84, passed away Feb. 15, 2018.

She was a lifelong Peninsula resident. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1951.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William M. Zilber and Gertrude Morewitz Zilber, and her sister, Dorene Z. Sarfan.

Jayne is survived by her five nephews, Gary Nachman (Janet), William Nachman (Rhoda), Lonny Sarfan (Terri), Randall Sarfan, and Edward Sarfan (Jody).

 
 
 
 
  She is also survived by nine grand nieces and nephews, Meredith, Michael (Amber) and their mother, Barbara; Joel; Alexandra (Brad), Stephanie; Ryan, Austin; Sydney, and Matthew; and great grand niece and nephew, Zoey and Zack; as well as numerous cousins. She was like mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her family and was "Aunt Jayne" to everyone she met.

Jayne worked for over thirty years as a civilian employee for Fort Monroe. Jayne was instrumental in the resettlement of Russian Jews on the Peninsula. She was also very active in the Peninsula Jewish Historical Society.

She was a lifelong member of Rodef Sholom Temple. The family would like to express their appreciation to The Hidenwood, Home Instead, and Grace Hospice for their loving care.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. at the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula.

Memorials may be made to the Peninsula Jewish Historical Society, the UJCVP Preschool Fund, or the Rodef Sholom Temple Relocation Fund.
