02/12/20 - NNHS Newsletter - Phil Turner

Philip Wayne Turner
(1942 - 29 Jan 2020)

Newport News High School Class of 1960

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have another sad Memorial Edition of the NNHS Newsletter today.   Phil Turner, Class of 1960, brother of Jimmy Turner ('56) of NC, and of the late Sandra Turner Ingels Grohowski ('57) and Ronnie Turner ('59) , passed away at the Capital Caring Halquist Hospice Center in Arlington on Wednesday, January 29, 2020.

From Fred Mays ('60) of VA - 02/12/20, 9:41 AM:

Good morning Carol: Hope you and your lovely family are doing well.

I am writing to report to you that the Daily Press Obituaries today report that
Phillip W. Turner in our class passed away. There were four children in this family: Jimmy, I think from the 1956 class, Sandra (very pretty) from the class of 1957, Ronnie from the class of 1959, and Phil from the class of 1960, my class. All, except the older one, Jimmy, are now deceased. Jimmy married Belvie Settles from our class. She died several months ago. They married while she was still in high school, and I believe she left school her senior year. When Belvie died, I asked if Phil would be at the funeral and was told he was in very poor health and would not be present. He had Mesothelioma and died from complications thereof.

You were probably notified that
Becky Morgan, from the class of 1960 died in mid December. There was no obituary nor service of any kind for Becky. She was very pretty and popular. I think she left school during her senior year when she married Bernie Meadows, class of 1959. Bernie is also deceased. Becky was in my homeroom (208) all through high school. Becky probably died with a broken heart; there was much tragedy in her family. Many know the story; however, it is not mine to tell. Becky had four children and, with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, reared to be grown. I met them at Peninsula Funeral Home, where I work part-time. Becky came to one of our reunions, possibly our 25 year reunion. She really looked good, especially considering all she had experienced.

Carol, thank you for all you do to spread the word to everyone.

God Bless you, my friend,

Fred Mays, class of 1960

Fred, thank you so much for providing all these details. I spotted Phil's obituary first thing this morning. Phil was a "Stuart Gardens kid", and while I never personally knew any of them, I certainly knew who they were. They seemed to be everywhere.

I was sad to hear of Phil's untimely passing. Although we didn't stay in touch after our school days at Newport News High School, we spent a lot of time together playing sports and having fun at the Newport News City recreation center. He was a truly nice guy, and a capable and tough athlete who always had a big smile and kind word for everyone.
