J. E. B. Stuart's 182nd Birthday

He was superbly mounted and his side arms gleamed in the morning sun like burnished silver.  A long black ostrich plume
waved gracefully from a black slouch hat cocked up on one side, held with a golden clasp.....  He is the prettiest and most
graceful rider I ever saw.  I could not help but notice with what natural ease and comely elegance he sat his steed as it
bounded over the field..... He and his horse appeared to be one and the same machine.

- George Neese of Maj. Gen. James Ewell Brown Stuart, C. S. A.
(06 Feb 1833 - 12 May 1864), June 1863

    Thanks so much, Susan!

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of LA - 02/01/15 - "Temple Marriage Sealing":

Beyond much words except the most joy and peace we have ever felt in our lives... Finally sealed to my best friend and companion for time and all eternity in the House of the Lord in Houston Texas Temple.
Saturday, January 31, 2015 - Houston LDS Temple, Spring, Texas

Thanks so much, Brent! These are wonderful images that capture as much as any could have of the wonderful, perfect day y'all had! Congratulations!

From My Daughter-in-Law, Laura Adams Harty (Cardston HS, Alberta - '95) of LA - 02/01/15 - "RE: Temple Marriage Sealing":

... What a clear difference it has made already. I don't know how I could love Brent so much more. Our hearts and souls are now truly connected. If anyone ever asks how much of a difference it makes, I will say that it is an incredible difference. What a beautiful and perfect day we had.

Thank you so much, Laura! I'm so happy for you both! I thought it was impossible for you two to look any more lovingly at one another than you did already, but the difference clearly shows even in these images! It's really quite astonishing!

From My #5 Son, Nathaniel Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '97) of IL - 02/03/15 AND 02/05/15 - "Metallica contest":

Metallica's fan club always has these contests for their fan club magazine. The last one was:

"Given the sporting nature of this mag this time around, we want you to create your All-Star rock'n'nroll baseball team. Y'know, pitcher = x rocker, first basemen = y rocker, until you have a starting team. We also want you to name the team.

Our Grand Prize winner will receive one of the now-very-rare inaugural Metallica/Giants caps signed by the guys along with a Giants/Metallica goodie pak. Two runners-up will receive a goodie pak."

I figured I'd have a pretty good shot as I love baseball, and made a submission which was mailed on September 29th, 2014. No doubt they'll take a jab at the Cardinals in the magazine itself. Fair enough:

As a lifelong Cardinals fan (we can pretend 2012 never happened) this Shortest Straw seems right up my alley. A few things of note: I tried to stick with North Americans as it's more traditionally a North American sport (although there are a handful of notable exceptions), I also only utilized living players rather than attempting a Hall of Fame dream team, and finally I went bass player heavy because I can. I thought about expanding to a 40-man September roster, but figured 25 would suffice.

Here's the batting order with their plate appearance music in parenthesis:

2B - Lars Ulrich (The Struggle Within)
SS - Geddy Lee (Rush - Driven)
1B - James Hetfield (Harvester of Sorrow)
C - Rob Trujillo (All Nightmare Long)
LF - Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society - SDMF)
RF - Dave Mustaine (Megadeth - Back in the Day)
3B - Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers - Torture Me)
P -
CF - Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers - Fortune Faded)

You'll note the pitcher is batting 8th. I liked when Tony La Russa played around with that strategy. It essentially makes the 9th hitter another lead off hitter and it just makes things more interesting as a whole.

The starting rotation would be:

Kirk Hammett - Nasty curves to match his nasty bends
David Ellefson - Heavy heat
Jason Newsted - crafty multi-pitch veteran
Les Claypool - Knuckleballer
Marty Friedman - Unorthodox Japanese free agent signing

In the bullpen:
Tim Commerford
Alex Lifeson
Tom Morello
Paul McCartney - Lefty specialist
Phil Anselmo - Closer

Bench players:
Neil Peart - Heavy lumber off the bench for late inning heroics
King Diamond - Can't pass that name up
Geezer Butler - Has a perfect baseball name
Jerry Cantrell - fourth outfielder
Dave Grohl - Utility player

Manager - Ozzy
Owner - Gene Simmons

Team Name - The Las Vegas KISSmet - With Gene Simmons as the owner KISS had to be in the name, and it only seems right a reference to Metallica be included. Las Vegas is the biggest metro area in the nation without a team, and this team should be quite the spectacle.

Also, go, Cardinals!

I got an email today saying:

"Hi Nathaniel, congratulations, you’re a runner up in the Shortest Straw 21:2 contest. Your prize is on the way."

Shortly thereafter, I received another email, "Oops, I wrote runner up and you’re actually the Grand Prize winner! Your prize is on the way. Congratulations!"

Just thought it was kind of exciting. One might say it was a major award even if it isn't Italian or even fragile.

From A Christmas Story (1983): Mr. Parker: Aaah! "Fra-GEE-leh!" It must be Italian!

The loot came in today (02/05/15).

Along with the autographed hat they also sent me a hoody, blow up guitar, and a commemorative tin with guitar pics.

Love y'all, and talk to ya later.

   WOWZERONI-RINI! That's fabulous, Nathaniel! Congratulations!

It would seem now that      Joshua (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL - '95 - of IL) was speaking prophetically when he called you "Faniel" or just "Fan" when you were first born. You ARE the ultimate fan!

From My Daughter, Adrienne Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL) of NC - 02/04/15 - "Sad Picture":

This is a sad, but beautiful picture that I found on Facebook.

Love ya,

Thank you, Adrienne, I love you, too! This image will surely touch the heart of every mother who's ever lost a child, whether before or after birth. I know it did mine.

From - 02/05/15:

A large group of ISIS fighters in Iraq were moving down a road when they heard a voice call from behind a sand dune: "One Marine is better than ten ISIS fighters."

The ISIS commander quickly ordered 10 of his best men over the dune where a gun battle broke out and continued for a few minutes, then silence.

The voice once again called out: "One Marine is better than one hundred ISIS 'S.O.B.'s'."

Furious, the ISIS commander sent his next best 100 troops over the dune and instantly a huge gun fight commenced. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence.

The voice called out again: "One Marine is better than a thousand ISIS fighters."

The enraged ISIS commander mustered 1,000 fighters and sent them to the other side of the dune. Rifle fire, machine guns, grenades, rockets and cannon fire rang out as a terrible fight was fought ... then silence.

Eventually, one badly wounded ISIS fighter crawled back over the dune and with his dying words told his commander, "Don't send any more men ... it's a trap. There're two of them."
