From Bobby Turpin ('58) of VA - 01/30/10 - "Re:   Freddie McDowell ('56 - of ID)":

    Dear Carol:

It was sure nice to read where
Charlie Hilling ('56 - of FL) had contacted the web-site concerning Freddie McDowell. Charlie and his family are one of the great families of North-End.

To answer the question, I have not heard anything from Freddie McDowell, concerning his receiving the 1955-56 Va. State Championship Trophy, as I was hoping someone in the "Typhoon Nation" might have heard from him. We must with great respect "the right of his privacy". I am hoping his health concerns noted are improving and he will be restored as before. I will certainly pass on any contact from Freddie, I receive.

My best to you, your family and the entire "Typhoon Nation".

    Love to all,
    Bobby (NNHS 1958)

Thank you so very much, Bobby!

From Chuck Jones ('66) of Northern VA - 01/30/10 - " Musician vs. United Airlines (customer revenge for unresponsive carriers":

Interesting lesson for business in the internet age:

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines. United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar. During his final exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was left with no choice other than to create a music video for YouTube exposing their lack of cooperation.

The Manager responded: "Good luck with that one, pal".

So he posted a retaliatory video on YouTube. The video has since received over 6.5 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted settlement in exchange for pulling the video.

Naturally his response was: "Good luck with that one, pal".

Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for the product recognition from the video that has lead to a sharp increase in orders.

The idea opens the door to a lot of issues that can be aired.

    Here's the video ....

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 01/30/10 - "I didn't know this.....":

Las Vegas Churches accept gambling chips

THIS MAY COME AS A SURPRISE TO THOSE OF YOU NOT LIVING IN LAS VEGAS, BUT THERE ARE MORE CATHOLIC CHURCHES THAN CASINOS.

NOT SURPRISINGLY, SOME WORSHIPERS AT SUNDAY SERVICES WILL GIVE CASINO CHIPS RATHER THAN CASH WHEN THE BASKET IS PASSED.
SINCE THEY GET CHIPS FROM MANY DIFFERENT CASINOS, THE CHURCHES HAVE DEVISED A METHOD TO COLLECT THE OFFERINGS.

THE CHURCHES SEND ALL THEIR COLLECTED CHIPS TO A NEARBY FRANCISCAN MONASTERY FOR SORTING AND THEN THE CHIPS ARE TAKEN TO THE CASINOS OF ORIGIN AND CASHED IN.

THIS IS DONE BY THE CHIP MONKS
    .

YOU DIDN'T EVEN SEE IT COMING, DID YOU?

AHHH, Ruthie, you're such a naughty baby! Thanks, Lady!

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 01/31/10 - "CD Wonderment":

    Webdoll,

Thanks for forwarding        Dave Sprigg’s (’64) of VA message and email.  My ticket on Mr. Peabody’s WABACK machine came Friday with the terrific five CD set of “our music." There was Bob Calvert, Roger Clark, air checks and the sound we know so well from WGH-1310. Most readers here apparently knew it was compiled by Capt. Spriggs for the 40th reunion of the class of ’64. He offered it to anyone who would ask for it and say at least a version of “Please.” Mine came Friday, talk about quick turnaround. He deserves full honors, including Bo ‘sun’s Pipe and Side Boys, for this “wonderment.”

Apparently in the “Fog of War,” I failed to realize you offer the opportunity to receive the CDs plus other great “stuff” at http://nnhs65.00freehost.com/CD-MIX.html.

Thanks to your treasure chest of jewels, including Dave,     Bill Black (’66) of GA and     Joe Madagan (’57) of FL for their help. Recently Major Joe also helped create a Memory Page on the USMC link of “Together We Served” for my late comrade, Khe San survivor Forrest E. Knipple (USMC) of Rocky Ridge, MD. You help keep ‘em flying!

    Norm Covert (’61) VA

Thank you very much, Normie!   There are still more wondrous treasures available in TYPHOONMART - even a PBS video from three years ago this week featuring YOU!

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 01/31/10 - "Tired of Peeling Potatoes?":

Maryann knows how to peel the spuds....ok, she was on Gilligan's Island, uhhh, that was a show in the 60's, ok, just follow her tips...

If you take the time to watch this, you will not only be glad you did, but you will forward this to all your daughters, sisters, moms, etc...

I haven't tried it yet, but I will! Just when you thought you knew everything about boiling potatoes ...

To all who love making scalloped potatoes from scratch and potato salad but hate peeling the boiled potatoes, here is the solution for easy peeling. This will BLOW your mind. Well, we do learn something new every day.

I wish I had known about this thirty years ago. Peeling the cooked potato was the least desirable part in making a potato salad. Enjoy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4W0qIPJmoo - Dawn Wells Potato Peeling Video

    No need for a peeler

       Thanks, Judy!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL - 01/31/10 - "Let It Go":

This is beautiful. Read it to the end...the message is awesome!!!

    By T. D. Jakes

There are people who can walk away from you.

And hear me when I tell you this! When people can walk away from you: let them walk. I don't want you to try to talk another person into staying with you, loving you, calling you, caring about you, coming to see you, staying attached to you. I mean hang up the phone.

When people can walk away from you let them walk. Your destiny is never tied to anybody that left.

The Bible said that, they came out from us that it might be made manifest that they were not for us. For had they been of us, no doubt they would have continued with us. [1 John 2:19]

People leave you because they are not joined to you. And if they are not joined to you, you can't make them stay.

    Let them go.

And it doesn't mean that they are a bad person; it just means that their part in the story is over. And you've got to know when people's part in your story is over so that you don't keep trying to raise the dead. You've got to know when it's dead.

You've got to know when it's over. Let me tell you something... I've got the gift of good-bye. It's the tenth spiritual gift. I believe in good-bye.. It's not that I'm hateful; it's that I'm faithful, and I know whatever God means for me to have, He'll give it to me. And if it takes too much sweat I don't need it. Stop begging people to stay.

    Let them go!!

If you are holding on to something that doesn't belong to you and was never intended for your life, then you need to......

    LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to past hurts and pains .......

    LET IT GO!!!

If someone can't treat you right, love you back, and see your worth......

    LET IT GO!!!

    If someone has angered you.

    LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to some thoughts of evil and revenge.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you are involved in a wrong relationship or addiction.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you are holding on to a job that no longer meets your needs or talents.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you have a bad attitude.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you keep judging others to make yourself feel better.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you're stuck in the past and God is trying to take you to a new level in Him.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you are struggling with the healing of a broken relationship.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you keep trying to help someone who won't even try to help themselves.....

    LET IT GO!!!

If you're feeling depressed and stressed .....

    LET IT GO!!!

If there is a particular situation that you are so used to handling yourself and God is saying 'take your hands off of it,' then you need to.....

    LET IT GO!!!

    'The Battle is the Lord's!'

Now, stop and think and appreciate God's power in your life, for doing what you know is pleasing to Him......

God loves you and watches over you every day.

       Thanks, Paul - excellent advice!

    FINALLY:

    From ArcaMax Jokes - 01/31/09:

    House Shopping

My husband had run to the store with our daughters, Sarah (4) and Hannah (2) and on the way home he drove through a neighborhood looking for houses for sale. After a bit Sarah asked, "Daddy, what are we doing?"

My husband said he was looking at the houses that were for sale.

Sarah asked "Are you gonna buy a new house?"

    Dad replied "Maybe."

Then Sarah said with much concern, "But Dad, how will we get it HOME?!"

    With or Without You

    Written by
Bono (Paul Hewson), The Edge (Dave Evans), Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen, Jr.

    Recorded by U2, 1987

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
    I wait for you

Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
    And I wait without you

    With or without you
    With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
    And I'm waiting for you

    With or without you
    With or without you
    I can't live
    With or without you

    And you give yourself away
    And you give yourself away
    And you give
    And you give
    And you give yourself away

    My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
    Nothing to win and
    Nothing left to lose

    And you give yourself away
    And you give yourself away
    And you give
    And you give
    And you give yourself away

    With or without you
    With or without you
    I can't live
    With or without you

    With or without you
    With or without you
    I can't live
    With or without you
    With or without you
