Dear Friends and Schoolmates,  

   There is yet more sad news this Monday.
   Betty Mullins Smith-Schulke, Class of 1950, passed away in Williamsburg at the age of 83.

                  Betty Mullins Smith-Schulke

   

WILLIAMSBURG - Betty Mullins Smith Schulke was born in 1932 in Callaway, Va. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1950.

She worked as a secretary for the Newport News Police Department and at TRADS at Fort Eustis. She then attended Grace Downs School in New York to become a Flight Attendant and flew for several years for Capital Airlines until she married John Smith in 1958.

They lived for years in Alexandria, Va. In 1990, she moved to Williamsburg to be closer to family and where she married Richard Schulke in 1997.

Betty was predeceased by her first husband, John Hugh Smith; parents, Bill and Fannie Mullins; sister, Florence Mullins Leonard McConnell; and nephew, Jim Harris.

She is survived by her husband, Richard J. Schulke; sister, Harriet Mullins Harris; and brother-in-law, Paul Harris; children, Brian and Aimee Schulke and Ellen and Douglas Lyman; nieces and nephews, Arnold and Susan Leonard Little, Bill and Yukiko Leonard, Molly Leonard and Bob Harris; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and numerous grand nieces and nephews.  -

 

 
 
 


Betty was a kind, fun-loving person who will be remembered for her sparkling sense of humor. She loved people, the Blue Ridge Mountains where she grew up, gardening, crossword puzzles, reading the Wall Street Journal cover to cover and the Washington Redskins. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 21 at 1pm followed by a service at 2pm, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her memory to the Salvation Army, 151 Kristiansand Dr., No. 106, Williamsburg VA 23188 or the , 603 Morris Drive, P.O. Box 5009, Newport News, VA 23605.
