Newport News High School Class of 1962

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I was shocked and saddened to read this sad news on this snowy Wednesday morning.
Wanda Thornhill Gatewood, Class of 1962, wife of John Gatewood ('61) of VA, passed away at home in Poquoson on Monday, January 15, 2018 at the age of 73.

She posted this remembrance on Facebook almost two years ago:

From Wanda Thornhill Gatewood ('62) of VA - 02/16/16 - "NNHS":

Such a great high school. Practice on the football field with the band and the flag twirlers at 6:30 AM. Work on the BEACON until 11:30 P.M. Catch the bus and ride home at midnight. Study, shower and roll hair on orange juice cans to get that flip. Never once felt scared or threatened. The only thing that ever scared me was my mom when she got on the warpath if my room wasn't clean. What a great life we had!

ABSOLUTELY! Thank you so much for the memories, Wanda!

For All the Saints

- Lyrics by William W. How (1823-1897) , 1864
Music (Sine Nomine) by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), 1906

For all the saints
who from their labors rest,
Who thee by faith
before the world confessed.
Thy name, O Jesus,
be forever blest.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock,
their Fortress and their Might;
Thou, Lord, their captain
in the well-fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear,
their one true light.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

O may Thy soldiers,
faithful, true, and bold,
Fight as the saints
who nobly fought of old,
And win with them
the victor's crown of gold.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce,
the warfare long,
Steals on the ear
the distant triumph song,
And hearts are brave again,
and arms are strong.
Alleluia!
Alleluia!

From earth's wide bounds,
from ocean's farthest coast,
Thro' gates of pearl
streams in the countless host,
Singing to Father,
Son, and Holy Ghost,
Alleluia!
Alleluia!
