01/15/20 - NNHS Newsletter - I'll Be Seeing You

That's the fun of going to a high school reunion: it's seeing the people who you
were close to all those years ago, and re-exploring the relationships of the past.”

- Jon Hurwitz
(b. 15 Nov 1977)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This old classic was one of the very first to be used on our website, but wasn't used as a Newsletter theme until last year. Written in 1938, it became a big hit in 1944 - especially among the families of servicemen sent overseas.

BONUS - I'll Be Seeing You - Frank Sinatra

"I'll Be Seeing You" is a popular song, with music by Sammy Fain and lyrics by Irving Kahal.[1] Published in 1938, it was inserted into the Broadway musical Right This Way, which closed after fifteen performances.[2]

The resemblance between the main tune's first four lines and a passage within the theme of the last movement of Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony (1896) was pointed out by Deryck Cooke in 1970.[3]

The recording by Bing Crosby became a hit in 1944, reaching number one for the week of July 1.[4] Frank Sinatra's version with Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra from 1940 charted in 1944 and peaked at No. 4.[5]

“The Son of God perfectly knows and understands, for He felt and bore our burdens before we ever did. And because He paid the ultimate price and bore that burden, He has perfect empathy and can extend to us His arm of mercy in so many phases of our life. He can reach out, touch, succor—literally run to us—and strengthen us to be more than we could ever be and help us to do that which we could never do through relying upon only our own power.”

Why, certainly, thank you, Kelly! You haven't fallen off my list at all; I just haven't employed it lately to send any announcements, this January having hit me even harder than it usually does.

From Jimmy Dick ('65) of FL - 01/15/19, 9:09 AM:

If you find yourself freezing today, maybe this will help. Remember in three more months it will start to warm up and you can once again find yourself enjoying something like this. Be patient and be blessed and let time go, the time will come again for the sea and not the snow.

   Thank you, Jimmy!

I'll Be Seeing You

Lyrics by Irving Kahal (05 Mar 1903 - 07 Feb 1942)

Music by Sammy Fain (17 June 1902 – 06 Dec 1989), 1938

I'll be seeing you, in all the old familiar places,
That this heart of mine embraces all day through,
In that small cafe, the park across the way,
The children's carousel,
the chestnut trees, the wishing well.
I'll be seeing you in every lovely summer's day,
In everything that's light and gay,
I'll always think of you that way,
I'll find you in the morning sun,
And when the day is through,
I'll be looking at the moon,
But I'll be seeing you.
