“The best cure for one's bad tendencies is to see them in action in another person.”

- Alain de Botton
(b. 20 Dec 1969)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

My daddy, the late Robert Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25) (19 Oct 1907 - 25 Apr 1960) was as big a fan of Bing Crosby as I am of Frank Sinatra From time to time he'd play    this old 78 and the two of us would sing-a-long with Bing.  Great times.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swinging_on_a_Star:

"Swinging on a Star" is an American pop standard with music composed by Jimmy Van Heusen and lyrics by Johnny Burke.[1] It was sung by Bing Crosby in the 1944 film Going My Way, winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song that year,[1] and has been recorded by numerous artists since then.

Song writer Jimmy Van Heusen was at Crosby’s house one evening for dinner, and to discuss a song for the movie Going My Way. During the meal one of the children began complaining about how he didn’t want to go to school the next day. The singer turned to his son and said to him, “If you don’t go to school, you might grow up to be a mule. Do you wanna do that?”

Van Heusen thought this clever rebuke would make a good song for the movie. He pictured Crosby, who played a priest, talking to a group of children acting much the same way as his own child had acted that night. Van Heusen took the idea to his partner lyricist Johnny Burke, who approved. They wrote the song.[2]

The first recording of "Swinging on a Star" took place in Los Angeles on February 7, 1944, released as Decca Records no. 18597. The Williams Brothers quartet, including Andy Williams, sang backup vocals to Crosby.[3]

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 01/11/14:

A guy was driving when a policeman pulled him over. He rolled down his window and said to the officer, "Is there a problem, Officer?"

"No problem at all. I just observed your safe driving and am pleased to award you a $5,000 Safe Driver Award. Congratulations. What do you think you're going to do with the money?"

The driver thought for a minute and said, "Well, I guess I'll go get that drivers' license."

The lady sitting in the passenger seat said to the policeman, "Oh, don't pay attention to him - he's a smart butt when he's drunk and stoned."

The guy from the back seat said, "I TOLD you guys we wouldn't get far in a stolen car!"

At that moment, there was a knock from the trunk and a muffled voice said, "Are we over the border yet?"

Swinging on a Star

Music by Jimmy Van Heusen (26 Jan 1913 - 06 Feb 1990)

Lyrics by Johnny Burke (03 Oct 1908 - 25 Feb 1964)

Recorded by Bing Crosby from Going My Way, 1944

Would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a mule

A mule is an animal with long funny ears
Kicks up at anything he hears
His back is brawny but his brain is weak
He's just plain stupid with a stubborn streak
And by the way, if you hate to go to school
You may grow up to be a mule

Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a pig

A pig is an animal with dirt on his face
His shoes are a terrible disgrace
He has no manners when he eats his food
He's fat and lazy and extremely rude
But if you don't care a feather or a fig
You may grow up to be a pig

Or would you like to swing on a star
Carry moonbeams home in a jar
And be better off than you are
Or would you rather be a fish

A fish won't do anything, but swim in a brook
He can't write his name or read a book
To fool the people is his only thought
And though he's slippery, he still gets caught
But then if that sort of life is what you wish
You may grow up to be a fish
A new kind of jumped-up slippery fish

And all the monkeys aren't in the zoo
Every day you meet quite a few
So you see it's all up to you
You can be better than you are
You could be swingin' on a star
