01/12/12 - NNHS Newsletter - I Hear You Knocking

“A fulfilling life is different to each person. You have to acknowledge your dreams,
and not just wait for life to happen, and opportunities to come knocking at your door.

- Joan Lunden
(b. 19 Sept 1950)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme is being revisited from 2005.

BONUS #1 - - I Hear You Knocking - Smiley Lewis, 1955

BONUS #2 - - I Hear You Knocking - Gale Storm, 1955

BONUS #3 - - I Hear You Knocking - Dave Edmunds, 1971

"I Hear You Knocking" (sometimes spelled "I Hear You Knockin'") is a popular rhythm and blues song with emphatic syncopation, written by Dave Bartholomew and Pearl King and published in 1955. The original recording was made by Smiley Lewis, reaching #2 on the Billboard R&B singles chart.

The lyrics concern a former lover whose knocking at the door will not be answered. A similar lyrical theme appears in the earlier songs "Keep A-Knockin'"(1935) and "Open the Door, Richard" (1947), to which "I Hear You Knocking" may be considered an answer song.

The song was popularized in 1955 in a cover version by Gale Storm in a recording on Dot Records catalog number 15412, reaching #2 on the Billboard charts. The song reached #3 on the Cash Box Best-Selling Record chart.

A later recording by Welsh band Dave Edmunds Rockpile (only initial releases were also credited to the band)[1] reached #4 on the Billboard charts in 1971, and in the UK it took the coveted Christmas number one slot in 1970, topping the UK singles chart for six weeks...[2]

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 01/11/12, 9:47 PM - "  Kylie is home":

Dear family and friends,

They brought Kylie back home with her own personal baby tanning bed.  She has to go into the hospital every morning to have blood work done to check her levels but they are going slowly down.  Thanks to everyone for their prayers.  She is not totally out of the woods yet.  Her weight is also coming up, so all the news was good.  She is the first of my grandkids I have spent so much time with when they were first born.  They have either been in the NICU or I have not been around.  It is so great to be here in Colorado Springs.

Love ya,

SUPER-DE-DUPER! Thanks so much for letting us know, Ruthie!

     From Me ('65) of NC - 01/11/12 - "Wheeler's Kandy Kitchen":

      Long gone now, of course...

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 01/12/12 - "RE: Wheeler's Kandy Kitchen":

Hi, Carol:
Wheeler's Kandy Kitchen was not part of my old stomping grounds when I lived in East End.
I just might have been pre-occupied with The Times Herald and Western Union. Didn't have much time for candy.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Hmmm - it may have just faded into the shadows of time... Thanks anyway, Adonis!

I Hear You Knocking

Written by Dave Bartholomew (b. 24 Dec 1920) and Pearl King, 1955

You went away and left me long time ago
And now you're knocking on my door

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been

I begged you not to go but you said goodbye
And now you're telling me all your lies

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been

You better get back to your use-to-be
'cause your kind of love ain't good to me

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been

I told you way back in 52
That I would never go with you

I hear you knocking
But you can't come in

I hear you knocking
Go back where you've been
