Newport News High School Class of 1948

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   There's even more sad news today.   Peggy Hudgins Copeland, Class of 1948, passed away in Virginia Beach on Friday, January 9, 2009 just two days after her 78th birthday.

 From the Daily Press - 01/11/09:

    VIRGINIA BEACH - Marguerite 'Peggy' Hudgins Copeland, 78, passed away peacefully at her home Jan. 9, 2009.

Her parents, Jessie Earl and Marguerite Burroughs Hudgins; and her husband, Roy E. Copeland predeceased her.

She grew up in Newport News, Va., and graduated from Newport News High school. She started out working for Old Dominion College, when it was a division of William & Mary and also worked for the Public Health Hospital in Norfolk in the Dental Dept. She and her husband, Roy were owners of many area restaurants including Dockside, Capt Roy's Hotdogs, and Lynnhaven Pub to name a few. She went in to real estate working for PMI Realty (now Select) and William E. Wood. She spent her 'retirement' working with family at Summs Skip and Collection Service. She enjoyed most days sewing, embroidering and shopping.

The three children that she leaves behind as well as their families cherished her. Cynthia 'Cindy' Summs and her husband, Mark, Roy Copeland, James E. 'Jimmy' Copeland and his wife, Anne. She loved her grandchildren and cherished the time she had with them, Steven, Matt, Kelsey, Brittney, Zachery, Nicholas, and Tanner. She loved her only surviving Aunt, Eleanor Burroughs Freeman and all her many cousins! She had many special friends who meant the world to her as well as did her extended Copeland family. She enjoyed sharing stories of the good ole times, as there were many special occasions that she enjoyed through her lifetime. She spent many years battling many illnesses and winning each battle. She lost her final battle to cancer.

We'd like to thank Dr. Burton Alexander and entire staff of Virginia Oncology for all the time and effort.

Her body will be cremated, H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel is handling arrangements. Interment will be private. The memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Kings Grant Presbyterian Church at 745 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA. 23452, with J. Selden Harris Jr. officiating the service.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Kings Grant Presbyterian Church or American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be made at www.hdoliver.com.

Cindy & Family,

It sure did break my heart to hear about Peggy passing away recently. Dad called me to tell me and i can not help but think about the very many good times our families shared during the good old years. having lost Mon almost 4 years ago I can tell you that time will heal the hurt that you are feeling now. Then the good memories will overtake the not so good. Due to another commitment, iIwill not be bale to make it on Tuesday evening. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, Mark and your family. I know your Mom loved you all very much and she is now laughing and having a cold one with Captain Roy up in heaven.

Lots of Love,

Billy Casey

Abide With Me

Words by Henry F. Lyte, 1847
Music by William H. Monk, 1861

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
