Mee Chun Leong
(16 July 1936 - 05 Jan 2011)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   We have more sad news today.
Mee Chun Leong, mother of Bill Leong ('66) of VA, Liz Leong Lawson of VA, Shirley Leong Napier of VA, Peggy Leong Evans of VA, George Leong of VA, and Jenny Leong Abernathy of CO, passed away in Hampton on Sunday, January 05, 2014 at the age of 89.

From the Daily Press - 01/08/14:

                      Mee Chun Leong

    HAMPTON - Mee Chun Leong, 89, joined her husband of 35 years, Sun Gin Leong, in heaven on Sunday, January 5, 2014.

Coming from Canton, China in 1953 to the Peninsula, she and her husband raised a large family to whom she leaves a lifetime of cherished memories. Completely devoted to her faith, she looked at every day as a gift from God. She was a member of Newmarket Baptist Church.

After retiring from the Virginia Baptist Retirement Home, she spent her leisure years making her daily 3-mile walks, working in her bountiful vegetable garden, and traveling to San Francisco to visit her brother and sisters.

She leaves behind to reminisce about the wonderful times at the family beach reunions and many family gatherings her sons William Leong and wife Jane (Grafton), George Leong and wife Amy (Quinton); and her daughters Elizabeth Lawson and husband Richard (Mathews), Shirley Napier and husband James (Yorktown), Peggy Evans and husband Robert (Seaford), and Jenny Abernathy and husband John (Lyons, CO).

Her grandchildren and their families brought her countless hours of joy: Chris and Lynn Leong, Donna and Viet Phan, Jennifer and Scott Nicholas, Michael and Melissa Lawson, Justin and Michelle Lawson, James and Casandra Napier, Jamie and Alejandro Diaz, Rachael and Russell Brady, Jeffery and Kristie Evans, Laurie and Michael Holley, Connor Leong, Harrison Abernathy, Jack Abernathy, and Davis Abernathy.

She always looked forward to visits and chats with great-grandchildren Emily, Graham, Ethan, Mason, Amy, Thomas, Lucas, Cheyenne, Mary Elizabeth, Reina, Camden, Landon, Mirabella, Michayla, and Jasmine.

Also surviving are her sisters, Mee G. Wong and Mei H. Lee, brother James Li and wife Amy, and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the team members at PACE in Hampton for the care and compassion they showed our mother. Her life was much enriched by her PACE friends and activities.

Visitation at 10 AM with services by Dr. William Lowrance at 11 AM Saturday, January 11, 2014, at W. J. Smith and Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News. Burial services will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Mrs. Leong was a special Lady . I worked with her at the Virginia Baptist Home N.N., Va. many a year ago. I would still think about her sometimes many years after ,she was a hard worker. May she rest in peace .

Lead Me Gently Home

Words and Music by Will L. Thompson, 1879
(7 Nov 1847 - 20 Sept 1909)

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.

* Refrain:
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.

Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
