01/03/15 - NNHS Newsletter - Forgotten Dreams

“There are many ways of breaking a heart.
Stories were full of hearts being broken by love,
but what really broke a heart was taking away
its dream - whatever that dream might be.”

- Pearl S. Buck
(26 June 1892 - 06 Mar 1973)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

True dreams should never be forgotten, not really.....

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMDMSQWgBQ0 - Forgotten Dreams - Leroy Anderson

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leroy_Anderson:

...In 2006, one of his piano works, "Forgotten Dreams", written in 1954, became the background for a British TV advertisement for mobile phone company '3'. Previously, Los Angeles station KABC-TV used the song as its sign-off theme at the end of broadcast days in the 1980s, and Mantovani's recording of the song had been the closing theme for WABC-TV's "Eyewitness News" for much of the 1970s...

200 YEARS AGO TODAY:

January 03, 1815 - Austria, the United Kingdom, and France formed a secret defensive alliance against Prussia and Russia.

THIS DAY IN WWII:

January 03, 1944 - Top Ace Major Greg "Pappy" Boyington was shot down in his Corsair by Captain Masajiro Kawato flying a Zero.

January 03, 1945 - U.S. General Douglas MacArthur was placed in command of all U.S. ground forces and U.S. Admiral Chester W Nimitz was placed in command of all U.S. Naval forces in preparation for planned assaults against Iwo Jima and Okinawa in Japan. This event effectively ended the concept of unified commands.

THIS DAY IN 1965:

Sunday, January 03, 1965 - Apparently, nothing at all happened anywhere in the world today.....

Throw in a spray bottle and spray your floor, let it sit for a minute or two... then scrub

BONUS CROCHET PATTERNS (To warm your grandchildren in January):

Kinga Erdem's Tiptoe Slippers - "These little booties are the perfect slippers for toddler feet. Soft and comfy, these Tiptoe Slippers feature three colors. The combination on the example (white, green, and pink) looks adorable, but they could be worked up in any colors. They would be charming in holiday hues or in three shades of the same color. If you plan on having your little one run around the house in these, add some grip to the bottom with puffy paint or dots of hot glue. Yarn can be super slippery."

Kinga Erdem's Gumdrop Kids Hat - "Just because the winter months mean grey and dreary weather doesn't mean we can't add a splash of color to the world. This Gumdrop Kids Hat looks amazing with a medley of bright colors, especially pinks and yellows. Any little girl or boy would be thrilled to show this hat off on the playground at school. Although this free crochet pattern is a little more involved than other crochet hat patterns, it is well worth the extra work. Tight stitches make for a thicker, warmer hat. Plus, the comfy ear flaps protect little ears from the wind.":

Stacey Lynn's Pancake Scarf - "Are you a breakfast person, and don't care who knows it? Then this Pancake Scarf pattern is perfect for you! Made with honey brown yarn, this silly scarf works up quickly, and will make an amazing conversation piece. The yellow butter circles added to every other pancake really make the scarf, transforming it from a brown scarf to a pancake lanyard. This free crochet pattern can be worked up to any length; just keep crocheting pancakes until you hit the desired length. This scarf makes a really unique gift. Consider giving it with a brunch gift certificate or pancake mix."

BONUS CASSEROLE RECIPES (To warm you in January):

http://www.recipelion.com/Casserole-Recipes/Loaded-Ham-and-Cheese-Casserole/ml/1 - Loaded Ham and Cheese Casserole - "Make another meal with your baked ham leftovers. Loaded Ham and Cheese Casserole is a hearty simple dish that will satisfy your family's hunger. Loaded with cheese and broccoli this ham casserole recipe will be a hit."

http://www.recipelion.com/Casserole-Recipes/Hamburger-Cheese-Casserole/ml/1 - Hamburger and Cheese Casserole - "There's nothing more satisfying than enjoying delicious casserole recipes while saving a buck or two. Hamburger Cheese Casserole is a wonderful home-style casserole that will become a family favorite. Easy to make with a wonderful flavor, you won't be able to put the fork down. Cheesy and creamy, it's comfort food at its finest."

http://www.recipelion.com/Casserole-Recipes/Easy-Weekday-Pizza-Pasta-Casserole/ml/1 - Easy Weekday Pizza Pasta Casserole - "Some of the best casserole recipes out there are also some of the easiest. Easy Weekday Pizza Pasta Casserole is a family favorite and a good example of quick, home-style cooking. Add in your favorite pizza toppings to make it just the way that you like it. Add your favorite vegetables, meats and cheeses. There's no limit to what you can do to this fun casserole recipe."

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 01/02/15:

A helicopter carrying passengers suddenly lost engine power and the aircraft began to fall. The pilot safely performed an emergency landing in water, and told the passengers to remain seated and to keep the doors closed, stating that in emergency situations, the aircraft was designed to stay afloat for 30 minutes, giving rescuers time to get to them.

Just then a man got out of his seat and ran over to open the door. The pilots screamed at him, "Didn't you hear what I said, the aircraft is designed to stay afloat as long as the doors remain closed?!?"

"Of course I heard you", the man replied, "but it's also designed to fly, and look how well that one worked out!!"
