Joseph L. Dickson, III
(09 Jan 1948 - 26 Dec 2018)

Newport News High School Class of 1966

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Here to begin our New Year is the full account of the news we reported earlier. Joe Dickson, Class of 1966, companion of Karrin Williams Frankie (NNHS / Warwick HS - '61), and brother of the late Connie Dickson Beauschene Mitchell ('67) and Elizabeth "Poopie" Dickson Weisspfenig, passed away in Newport News on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 shortly before his 71st birthday.

From the Daily Press - 01/02/19:

            Joseph L. Dickson, III

NEWPORT NEWS - Joseph L. Dickson, III passed away on December 26, 2018 after a long illness of kidney failure and diabetes. He was a lifelong resident of Newport News and attended J. W. Daniels Elementary School and was a 1966 graduate of Newport News High School.

Joe started to work for the Naval Re-work Facility in Norfolk and later transferred to Newport News Shipbuilding in April 1972 where he retired with 41 years of service from Northrop Grumman in the QID Department in 2013.

Joe started riding motorcycles early in his life but his passion came when he bought his first Honda Goldwing in 1991. He became a member of the Goldwing Road Riders Association in 1983 where he became charter members of VA-B Virginia Beach VA-C Newport News and started VA-O Williamsburg in 2000. He was active with the chapters as Secretary, Assistant Chapter Director and Chapter Director of VA-C and VA-O.

Joe Dickson

One of his best achievements came when he and Karrin Frankie were selected to become the 1997 Virginia Couple of the Year. The second achievement was in 2015 when he was awarded the Vernon L. Needham "Spirit of Virginia Award" in Roanoke at the "Rally in the Valley". Joe couldn't do any work on a car but he could take apart and put back together a Goldwing or do any mechanical work that needed to be done. He loved working on his bike as well as many members of his chapters or even strangers when they called. He spent many hours at work but never charged anyone. He was also a member of the CB Club of Newport News-Hampton and served as VEEP for two years.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph L. and Mildred "Monk" Griggs Dickson, Jr.; his sisters, Connie Beauschene Mitchell (Ron), Elizabeth "Poopie" Weisspfenig; and his Aunt Ruth Mater.

He leaves to cherish his memory his fiancée of 25 years, Karrin W. Frankie; son Joseph L. Dickson IV (Lila) of Newport News; mother of his son, Betty "Jo" Dickson of Hampton; niece and great niece, Lynnel and Landyn Beauchesne of WV; nephews, Will and Mathew Weisspfenig of FL; brother-in-law Ron Mitchell (Debbie) of Sedley; and his beloved three four-legged girls, Coco, Kaci, Marie and Willow; and four very dear friends, Brady Earnhart (Linda) of York, Dan Carmine (Ritchie) of Gloucester, "Fats" Bernard (Dyane) of GA, and Leo Smith (Margaret) of TX.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 PM, Sunday, January 6, 2019 at W. J. Smith and Son Funeral Home, 210 Harpersville Road, Newport News. Visitation will begin at 2 PM. Reception will be held after the service, place to be announced.

Contributions in Joe's memory can be made to the Peninsula  Diabetes Association, Peninsula Kidney Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

I find it hard to put into words how much Joe meant to us. He was a man with a heart the size of Texas. We loved riding motorcycles in his group. I don’t think I ever saw him without a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone. Joe will be missed by all who knew him, especially by us. Sending our deepest heartfelt sympathy to Karrin and Joe’s family and friends.

Oh Joe! For the short amount of years Ray, Wil, Cyndy and I have known you, you have been a star in our lives. Motorcycles might had been the link for our friendships, however you knew you and Karrin were and are much more. Oh the things I have share with you. Late nights, early mornings, card games, rides, music, cars, food, tears, laughter, knowledge, swimming, magic shows, picture, adventures, and well, just life. Thank you until we ride again.

May you find the strength and courage you need during this trying time.

Joe and Karrin were due to visit us on December 13 but Joe had a more important destination to "visit." He will be sorely missed. He is riding on his Gold Wing as I write this message. Sincere condolences on the loss of Joe from all our lives.

Come, Ye Disconsolate

Words by Thomas Moore; alt. by Thomas Hastings
Music by Samuel Webbe

Come, ye disconsolate, where'er ye languish.
Come to the mercy seat, fervently kneel.
Here bring your wounded hearts, here tell your anguish;
Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

Joy of the desolate, light of the straying,
Hope of the penitent, fadeless and pure!
Here speaks the Comforter, tenderly saying,
"Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot cure."

Here see the bread of life; waters flowing
Forth from the throne of God, pure from above.
Come to the feast of love; come, ever knowing
Earth has no sorrow but heaven can remove.
